Friday Fetch: Pet Peek

If my backyard had a solid fence, then the Pet Peek would be at the top of my “must have” list! The Pet Peek is a durable plastic dome that can create a window view in any solid fence for your dog. This DIY project is a must have for any dogs that want a “peek” outside their own yard!

Mattie & Margot Collars // Ammo the Dachshund

I purchased one of Mattie & Margot’s Mystery Collars (in yellow) and received this sunny Yellow Gold collar – isn’t it happy? With their Mystery Collars you can choose a color range for $16 or let it be a total surprise for $12 – what a great deal!

Mattie & Margot Collars // Ammo the Dachshund

And because Rachael (the expert sewing machine operator behind Mattie & Margot) knew that us farm dogs always need a back-up collar, she sent along this snazzy Bluebird/Navy Collar too.

I’m still not sure which one I will stink up first on the farm, it’s a tough call.

I was looking so fine in my new collars that my kitty pal Spider got a little jealous. Too bad for her they don’t come in kitty sizes!

But for all you canines out there, I’m sure there’s a Mattie & Margot Collar just for you, they even come in a new miniature size! Which one would you choose?

My Pickle Pocket – Treat Dispenser for Dogs

Disclaimer: This review contains affiliate links.

Recently mom picked up a new toy for me called the Pickle Pocket; after hearing some rave reviews from some of my dog agility classmates. Designed for treat dispensing, I was eager to give it a try, especially after I’ve mastered and broken many a treat dispensing toys including kongs and my kicker box (which is far too easy for me now).

Pickle Pocket - Treat Dispenser for Dogs - Review // Ammo the Dachshund

My new pickle toy is different from many of the other treat dispensers I’ve tried. This one contains three lengthwise slits across the product which are meant to hold your dog’s favorite snack or kibble.

Mom has been experimenting stuffing it with lots of different things like string cheese, peanut butter, cookies, dog food, and even hot dogs.

Pickle Pocket - Treat Dispenser for Dogs - Review // Ammo the Dachshund

I can honestly say that this toy takes a bit of work to get the yummies out. Five cookies takes me about 20 minutes to eat – and I’m an expert at treat dispensing!

The Pickle Pocket also boasts that it’s virtually indestructible (so far it’s survived my shark-like teeth), FDA approved, floats in water, and is dishwasher safe.

Even though this toys takes a bit of work on my part, I’m not complaining, because a constant flow of cookies is NEVER a problem!

Friday Fetch: Pet Trackers for Dogs

I spend a lot of my time on my family’s 20 acre horse farm and while I love roaming the open land, I admit, I do like to push the natural boundaries a bit. Our farm is not fenced for dogs (me and Trooper) and for the most part I usually don’t wander too far from the barn, well that is unless I get on the trail of a pesky groundhog.

Now while I am microchipped, and I wear identification tags (including my BlanketID tag) at all times, my mom always said she wished there was a way to track my where-abouts at all times. Enter GPS Trackers for dogs! Now while I haven’t tried any of these myself, I did round up a few promising prospects that perhaps someday I’ll get to take for a whirl.

RoamEO Pet Monitor System $179

By placing the battery chargeable GPS collar from RoamEO on your dog you can use their receiver to locate and track your dog should the need arise. Once it is able to locate your dog the receiver will light up with directional bars pointing you towards your pet. It will even tell you the distance your pet is from you.

My thoughts: The collar looks a bit bulky and their website says it’s meant for medium to large sized dogs, so I wonder if it would even work on smaller dogs. I do like that it only costs a one-time fee, and there is no annual subscription fee to use the tracker. It also wasn’t entirely clear on the website how far the gps can track your dog, it may be only 0.5 miles.

You can purchase the RoamEO HERE.

Garmin Astro $599

The Garmin Astro is a GPS-enabled tracking system for sporting dogs. Able to track your dog up to 9 miles, this unique system pinpoints your dog’s position and shows you exactly where he is. One GPS tracker can track up to 10 dogs and as often as every 5 seconds, your dog’s collar transmits his position to your handheld. You can see his current location and a trail of where he’s been on the map page of your handheld. Switch over to the Dog Tracker page to view a compass pointing to your dog’s location as well as his current status (stopped, walking, running). This system works with AA batteries.

My thoughts: While this model seems to be great at tracking dogs, it is more designed for hunting dogs when they are in the field – then locating a lost dog. I like that it has a map view which may make finding a dog a bit more convenient. It also only costs a one-time fee and does not require a monthly subscription plan.

You can purchase the Garmin Astro HERE.

Tagg Pet Tracker $100 (plus $7.95/month service)

Tagg is a pet tracking device that uses GPS and wireless technology to track your pet’s location. Using your computer or a mobile device Tagg will track your pet 24 hours a day. You can set up boundaries on their map, and whenever your dog strays from the zone the Tagg system will alert you via email or text message. You can also use Tagg to track your pet’s daily and long-term activity levels to stay on top of their health and exercise. The Tagg can easily be attached to any collar your dog owns and is fully rechargeable lasting up to 30 days. The Tagg system is not based on a range or distance from your home or docking station, and it will locate and track your pet anywhere in the United States where there is Verizon Wireless network coverage. The first 3 months of service is included with the Tagg Tracker and after that the service is $7.95/month. Additional costs apply to adding another dog to your subscription. This device is recommended for pets 10lbs or over (and can be used on cats too).

My thoughts: I really like that Tagg can locate your pet anywhere in the United States regardless of how far it is from the docking station or your home. It is also nice to be able to attach the tracker to any collar (so we can still be stylish). It’s unfortunate that there is a monthly subscription fee in addition to purchasing the pet tracker, but perhaps it’s well worth it to make sure your best friend never goes missing. I wonder how the map boundaries would work for a dog that spends time in multiple locations (like me who spends time on the family farm and at home in my own backyard) – it was unclear if you can add multiple locations to be notified if your dog leaves the area.

You can purchase the Tagg Pet Tracker HERE.

Pocket Finder $150 (plus $12.95/month service)

The PocketFinder GPS Pet Tracker turn virtually any sized collar or harness into a GPS dog collar. Simply attach the device to your dog’s collar and track them from the website or with the free apps for your smartphone. Similar to the Tagg Tracker, you can set unlimited “Geo-Fence” zones and receive alerts via email or text when your dog goes outside the zone. This rechargeable device allows you to instantly see the GPS location of your dog anytime, anywhere, with the greatest accuracy, to within a few feet of its physical location. You can even access up to 60 days of tracking history to ensure a dog walker does their job or your pet is active.

My thoughts: The website says it’s designed for dogs 20lbs or over, and the tracker device is about the size of an oreo – so it seems a bit bigger than it’s counterpart the tagg tracker. I do like how you can set up multiple zones to track your dog in, should they leave the area – and I’m not sure that the tagg can do this. The monthly service fee is a bit steeper than the comparable tagg.

You can purchase the PocketFinder HERE.

SpotLite 2.0 $120 (plus $12.99/month service)

SpotLite is able to locate your dog from anywhere at anytime using your cell phone, smart phone and/or computer. SpotLite comes with a unique “Rescue” button. If someone finds your lost dog, all he or she has to do is press the “Rescue” button and an emergency message with your dog’s location will be sent to you. Just like the Tagg and PocketFinder you can set up “SafeSpots” so when your dog strays outside the area you will receive a text or email message letting you know the current location of your dog. SpotLite also comes with the American Kennel Club Companion Animal Recovery (AKC CAR) support, which is available 24/7 to help you get your dog – or locate the home of a found dog enrolled in the program. Their tracking device attaches to your dog’s existing collar and is fully rechargeable.

My thoughts: Their website says the device can be used on any size dog, but they recommend 10lbs or over. I really like that this device works with the AKC CAR program, boasting to be the only GPS pet tracker on the market that offers this, which provides your pet with a unique id number and is available by phone 24/7, even giving you turn by turn directions should your pet go missing. The rescue button on the actual GPS unit is also a great bonus feature. I also like that you can set up multiple safespots (10 total) and activate up to 5 at a time. The monthly service fee is a bit higher, but it comes with a lot of extras that the other devices don’t have.

You can purchase SpotLite HERE.

Sponsor Welcome: K9 CarFence

I’m very excited to welcome my new blog sponsor, K9 CarFence!

Sponsor Welcome // K9 Carfence // Ammo the Dachshund

You might remember a couple of months ago I got to test out their K9 CarFence in my own car (you can read my review here).

I’m a huge advocate of keeping pets safe in the car (we’re all precious cargo now aren’t we?), and the K9 Carfence is one of those products that does just that! We should all be able to agree that allowing your dog to roam freely in the car while you are driving is not very safe, for you or your pet. With the K9Carfence you can still allow your dog that freedom in the car, while keeping them safe at the same time.

Some key features of the K9Carfence include:

  • Catches and cradles dogs in a soft strong net in case of sudden stops
  • Fast, easy, no-tools set up
  • Keeps your pet visible to you at all times with the see-through mesh
  • Keeps pets in a safe confined area and out from under car pedals or laps which can easily distract a driver
  • Can accommodate multiple dogs within one K9Carfence
  • Easy to fold up and move to another vehicle

Friday Fetch: Obtrack Dog Coats

You all know I love a good coat, especially during the cold winters here in Pennsylvania. So when one of the blogs I read (Oscar Ate My Muffin) posted about a pet coat that they absolutely love, I knew I just had to check it out.

The Obtrack coats were designed to protect a dog’s important muscle groups, thus keeping them from injury. Their coats have multiple points of adjustments to tailor the fit to each individual dog, and they even come in Dachshund sizes! These highly breathable, but exceptionally warm coats are nothing but stylish looking – and I certainly have added one to my wish list!

My Crazy Rebels Custom Pet Painting

Right before Christmas my mom entered a giveaway on the Pawsh blog for a spiffy pet painting made by the fine folks at Crazy Rebels. And as luck would have it, she won! The even better part was that the painting was going to be of me!

So I helped mom look through lots of my photos, and we picked out this silly photo from a few years ago of me in my super hero cape. I thought it would look fun turned into a cartoon style painting.

The I headed over to Design Seeds and picked out the blue background color seen in the photo below.

Guinea Pig - Testing out the new Nifty Fifty Lens // Ammo the Dachshund

One of the things mom got for Christmas this year was a new camera lens.

Guinea Pig - Testing out the new Nifty Fifty Lens // Ammo the Dachshund

Dubbed a “nifty fifty” lens, mom’s new lens has been praised by professional pet photographers for it’s use in taking portraits of many a furry friends.

While mom is busy learning how to take better pictures with said camera lens, I bet you can guess who her guinea pig has been.

Although it’s still to-be-determined if this lens is capable of capturing my stunning good looks.

2013 New Year Goals

In keeping up with my yearly tradition I’ve decided to take a look back over the goals I made for myself last year to see how I did! I’ve also come up with a new list of goals for 2013 that will hopefully keep me on my toes!

My 2012 Goals:

1. Learn a new trick with my favorite pony, Minnow.

Ok, so I can’t recall a SPECIFIC trick I learned with Minnow this past year, but I did star in our brand-new Painting Pony DVD with him. And I had a super fun super hero shoot with Minnow this summer.

Ammo the Dachshund Super Hero and his Super Hero Pony

2. Compete in my first agility trial or take an agility class with a new club.

While I’m not quite ready for my first agility trial just yet, I have been taking agility classes since the spring. I’m hoping I might be ready for a trial sometime next year.

DIY Dog Agility Weave Poles // Ammo the Dachshund

3. Make more home movies, featuring me!

I’m happy to report that I’ve created lots of new video footage this year (over 50 videos on my youtube channel!), and I even landed on two national television spots at the end of this year (which I’ll be sharing all the details on the blog soon). And if you want to catch my biggest performance of the year you can check out my new DVD HERE!

Filming for the Painting Pony DVD 2012

4. Get more creative with my costumes.

I’m happy to say I’ve dressed up more this year than any other year! You might recall my pilot’s outfit when I went flying, my super cool Halloween costume as Wile E. Coyote, and even my dapper Holiday outfit for this year.

Ammo the Dachshund // Halloween // Wile E. Coyote Costume

5. Master some new tricks and share them on the blog.

I started a new feature on the blog this year called Let’s Get Tricky! I also added a few new tricks to my repertoire and I’m hoping to continue the trend in 2013.

Ammo the Dachshund // Let's Get Tricky // Teach Your Dog to High-Five

6. Take pictures every month for my 2013 Calendar!

So I may not have specifically set out to take photos for my calendar every month, I did rack up quite a lot of space on Mom’s hard-drive with my thousands of photos from this year.

2013 Dachshund Calendar from the Flying Hero Etsy Shop // Ammo the Dachshund

7. Make more DIY projects.

I definitely got my DIY on this year! I came up with over 10 great DIY projects this year, including my Birthday Bandana, a Dipped Yellow Chair, and even a Pet First Aid Kit.

Birthday Week // DIY Pet Birthday Bandana // Ammo the Dachshund

8. Paint more.

Painting may have taken a bit of a backseat this year, but that didn’t stop me from getting created. I opened up my very own Etsy Shop, Flying Hero, to sell my greeting cards, calendars and more – many of which have helped raise money for animal rescues!

9. Dig more holes in the backyard.

You know I got this one covered!

10. Smile everyday!

How can you not smile when you’re having this much fun!

Ammo the Dachshund // Backyard Super Hero

So moving on to the upcoming year, I can’t wait to start 2013 off with a bang!

2013 Goals:

  1. Create some more greeting card designs for my Flying Hero Etsy Shop
  2. Master the weave poles for my agility classes
  3. Compete in an agility trial
  4. Learn a performance that I can perform on my own at events
  5. Make every day count!

So what about you? What are your goals for 2013?

DIY Weave Poles with the Dog Agility Shop

DIY Dog Agility Weave Poles // Ammo the Dachshund

I’m at the point in my Dog Agility training that I’m going to start learning how to do weave poles. Learning to do weave poles is one of the most challenging things in Dog Agility, so mom says it’s important that we have our own set at home to practice in between classes.

So when my friends over at the Dog Agility Shop offered up a set of Spikes and Pole Placers, I knew it was time to jump right in and DIY a set of weave poles!

Building your own set of weave poles is super easy and cost effective (about $25) with the help of the Dog Agility Shop. Here’s what you’ll need…..

DIY Dog Agility Weave Poles // Ammo the Dachshund

DIY Dog Agility Weave Poles

Supplies Needed:

  • A set of 6 or 12 Spikes from the Dog Agility Shop (I used 6 since I’m a beginner)
  • Weave Pole Placer from the Dog Agility Shop
  • 3/4 inch PVC Pipe (total of 228″)
  • Six 3/4 inch PVC caps
  • PVC cutting tool
  • Duct Tape

Directions:

Once your Spikes and Pole Placer arrive from the Dog Agility Shop you will need to cut your 3/4 inch PVC pipe into 6 pieces that are 38 inches in length. Then place the PVC caps on one end of all your poles and attach the other end to the Spikes. Then you can stripe your poles with colored duct tape to make them more visible. Once your poles are done, lay out the pole placer, and place your poles into the ground through the grommet holes in the placer. Now you’re ready to learn weave poles!

DIY Dog Agility Weave Poles // Ammo the Dachshund

Inexpensive, easy to set-up, easy to transport, and oh so much fun – these weave poles are looking great in my backyard!

DIY Dog Agility Weave Poles // Ammo the Dachshund

Sadly there are no super cool photos of me weaving through these poles like a pro (yet), because I’ve only just begun my training.

Having these bad boys in my back yard will give me no excuse to not show up everyone in my class when it comes to the weave pole training.
