What to Pack when you go Summer Camping with your Dog

One of my favorite summertime adventures with my family is to go camping, and as luck would have it this weekend I did just that! You may have caught a glimpse of my outdoor activities this weekend on Instagram and Facebook, and while I promise a full recap of all my camping related fun, today I’d thought I’d share how I pack for a camping trip.

Ammo’s Must Have Summer Camping Gear:

The key to summer camping with your four-legged companion is to make sure you bring plenty of items to keep them cool in the heat. During the day you can also choose camping activities that involve water (like swimming, kayaking, or boating) or shade (like hiking in the woods or geocaching). And when in doubt, wait for a cooler month to go on a camping adventure.

My Holiday Adventures

Ammo's Holiday Adventures // Ammo the Dachshund

This year when Christmas morning arrived, so did the snow! I awoke to a blanket of snow in my backyard….it was glorious!

After taking a romp in the newly fallen snow I set to work unwrapping all of my gifts!

Santa must of known that I’ve been a very good boy, because he brought me lots of goodies this year.

One of my favorite gifts this year was an add-on for my agility poles so that I can practice indoors too! Santa knows me so well!

So after diving into all my presents at home, we loaded up the car and headed over to Trooper’s house for some more Christmas fun.

I dressed for the occasion in my Holiday tie!

Trooper said I made him feel very under dressed.

Even my new cousin Jack joined us for some fun during the holidays – although he was smart and staked out the best spot on the couch before we started opening gifts.

We opened so many gifts at Trooper’s house, that Trooper fell asleep with all his new toys in his mouth. He just doesn’t know how to hang.

After the party at Trooper’s we loaded up the car again and headed to my MomMom & PopPop’s house so that I could give my human cousins some gifts too!

My cousin Maddie got a pony for Christmas, which she promptly named Ammo. I’m not sure if I should be flattered or insulted?

When we finally arrived back home late that night, mom said I had to put all my new toys away in the new toy baskets Santa had brought me.

I figured Santa would want me to enjoy my gifts to the fullest, so I snuggled up for the night inside one of my toy bins. Morning couldn’t come soon enough!

Here’s a round-up of what goodies I got this year:

Decisions. Decisions.

The other day I got to take a much needed trip to Petco.

And by much needed, I mean I NEEDED new toys.

After agonizing over the perfect toy to choose I picked out these two and was excited to give them a whirl when I got home.

I was having a grand time playing with my new toys in my yard when my neighbor Harley the Rottweiler peeked her head over the fence.

New toys are grand, but having a real friend to play with is so much sweeter. Ammo the Dachshund

Birthday Week: DIY Dog Toys

One of the other fun gifts I got from my mom on my Birthday was some new dog toys! These dog toys are really special though, because my mom made them! Do you believe it? My dad didn’t even notice they weren’t store bought goodies.

Keep reading to find out how my mom made these super special toys just for me….thanks mom!

DIY BALL DOG TOY

Supplies:
Old ball (a tennis ball* works great)
About 1/2 yard of Fabric
A piece of ribbon
Scissors

DIY dog toys

1. Gather your supplies. Mom used an old squeaky ball from one of my toys and one of dad’s old stained polo shirts (he’s a messy eater just like me).

2. Cut your fabric into two strips – roughly 6″ x 14″ (you can adapt this to really any size you want)

DIY dog toys

3. Fold the fabric strips in half and wrap around your ball (placing the ball in the center of the folds). Tie your ribbon as tight as you can around the base of the ball after wrapping it several times around.

4. Cut the tail of your fabric into several 2″ wide strips, then using three strips at a time braid them into sections. Try to make your braids as tight as possible (it’s harder for little teeth to rip them apart then).

5. Using the excess fabric at the end of your braid tie several knots to keep the braids in place.

Yeah! Now you have a brand-new toy for your favorite furry friend!

DIY PLASTIC BOTTLE DOG TOY

Supplies:
Plastic Bottle
About a yard of fabric (we used an old tye-dyed bed sheet)
Scissors

DIY dog toys

1. Select a plastic bottle to use as your new dog toy. Then cut three to four 1″ wide strips of fabric off one of the edges of your fabric. These will be used later as ties, a piece of ribbon would also work for this purpose.

2. Using your remaining fabric place the bottom of the bottle about 3″ from the edge and wind the fabric around the bottle. Wrap it up just like you would a hoagie in paper – tucking in the excess just before you reach the end of the fabric.

3. Using the 1″ wide strips of fabric you previously cut, tie them around the bottle tightly – using them to secure the fabric to the bottle. Make sure to tie one right after the bottle cap as well.

DIY dog toys

4. Cut the excess fabric near the cap of the bottle into 2″ wide strips. Then using three strips at a time, braid each section and finish off by knotting them.

Birthday Week: Wish List

What’s a Birthday week without a wish list? Here’s a few things I’ve been swooning over lately!

ammo the dachshund's birthday wishlist

1. Bowtie from Silly Buddy. I’ve had my eye on one of these for a long time now. But they’re all so dashing I can’t decide which one I LOVE best!

2. Sky Blue Raincoat from Noodle and Friends. You can never have too many raincoats!

3. Travel Bowl from Dudley & Bea. My current travel bowl has seen better days, too many adventures I guess! I think I deserve something spiffy and new.

4. Toy Basket from Anthropologie. This isn’t really a toy basket per say, but that doesn’t mean I couldn’t stuff the thing to the brim with my favorite go-to toys. [via]

5. Dog Duvet Cover from MollyMutt. Admittedly my current MollyMutt dog bed at the shop has seen better days – I blame the stresses of a 9 – 5. I’m also loving this duvet.

Sharing

I’m soooo nice to my pals. Like really nice. So nice that I share my toys and my bones! Just check out this video from when Trooper and Spider visited the shop.

Ok fine, I was out on my walk and I had no idea that Spider was playing with my favorite toy, and Trooper was eating my bone. But I MIGHT have shared if they had asked!
