New York or Bust

New York of Bust // Ammo the Dachshund

Over the 4th of July weekend I packed up my ponies and headed north 5 hours to New York!

New York of Bust // Ammo the Dachshund

New York of Bust // Ammo the Dachshund

After so many pit-stops I was fully expecting to end up in the big apple, but instead I ended up in the middle of nowhere at a horse campground!

New York of Bust // Ammo the Dachshund

I unpacked my ponies and tucked them in for the night….

New York of Bust // Ammo the Dachshund

…and pitched my tent for yet another fun weekend of camping!

New York of Bust // Ammo the Dachshund

I may or may not have hogged all the sleeping bags in the night. At least I was comfy!

New York of Bust // Ammo the Dachshund

When I awoke the next morning it became apparent that my ponies had made the long journey to New York to compete on a dog agility course! (at least that’s what it looked like to me)

New York of Bust // Ammo the Dachshund

It had a teeter totter….

New York of Bust // Ammo the Dachshund

…and some sort of porcupine looking things…

New York of Bust // Ammo the Dachshund

…and chickens? Ok well maybe it was the advanced dog agility course, which would explain why I’ve never seen any of these obstacles at my training classes.

Regardless my ponies were super brave and attempted each and every one of these challenging obstacles over the weekend!

New York of Bust // Ammo the Dachshund

I had a relaxing weekend watching them perform from the comfort of my favorite seat in the car. I even had my portable fan going to keep me cool.

New York of Bust // Ammo the Dachshund

I even got to pack in some tanning during my weekend in New York. And before I knew it we were on the road again headed back home to Pennsylvania.

New York of Bust // Ammo the Dachshund

And the good news is, we only got one flat tire on the way home! (not to worry, I’m an expert at changing tires).

What sort of adventures did your dog have over the 4th of July weekend? Ammo the Dachshund

Sleepypod Clickit Review & Giveaway

Sleepypod Clickit Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

After checking out the Sleepypod Yummy Bowls a few weeks ago Trooper and I are back to share another Sleepypod product – the Clickit 3 Point Safety Harness.

Sleepypod Clickit Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

Now if you’ve never heard of the Clickit, you mainly need to know one thing. It’s the HIGHEST rated dog restraint for the car in a crash test performed by the Center for Pet Safety last fall and the only 3-point car restraint for dogs on the market. Now that’s saying a lot!

You can check out more about what makes Clickit so safe here.

Sleepypod Clickit Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

Trooper and I of course always wear harnesses and restraints when riding in the car and we’re sticklers for making sure that all passengers (dogs included) are buckled up, so we were excited to test out the Clickit.

Sleepypod Clickit Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

Now the Clickit is designed to not just be a car harness, but also a walking harness too. You’ll notice though because of the width of the chest piece that it’s much more suited for walking bigger dogs in, as it was a little too wide for me to go for an average walk in. If you have a very small dog Sleepypod recommends using one of their travel carriers to restrain your pet safely in the car. I was teetering on the cutoff to being too small for the Clickit, but I was relieved when the extra small seemed to fit me properly.

P.S. you’ll notice in the above picture that mom forgot to tuck in the straps after she adjusted them for me. She realized later that you can tuck all the access webbing into the harness so it looks nice and clean.

Sleepypod Clickit Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

Now what makes the Clickit different from other car harnesses is that the back has a unique criss-cross design so that your dog is safety belted into the car in 3 separate points. The top collar part has a ring for attaching ID tags or a leash for walking.

Sleepypod Clickit Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

All those straps may look complicated to put on your dog at first, but it’s actually quite simple to attach. You can check out this handy video from Sleepypod on how to put it on your dog.

Sleepypod Clickit Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

Before Trooper and I could set out on our maiden voyage mom had to attach the included tethers to the latch anchors in the backseat of mom’s car. (Latch anchors are installed in any car manufactured after 2003, but even if your car doesn’t have them you can get them installed.)

Sleepypod Clickit Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

So Trooper and I loaded up in the car and got ready to travel safely!

Sleepypod Clickit Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

With the Clickit you attach the tethers to each of the side rings, and run your car’s seatbelt through the criss-cross on the back of the harness. This gives your dog three points of attachment, and makes sure that they would stay put in the event of a crash.

Sleepypod Clickit Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

Sleepypod Clickit Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

Trooper and I both had no problem laying down in the backseat for our ride. Here’s a fun video of our first voyage with our Sleepypod Clickits:

You can also watch this on youtube.

Sleepypod Clickit Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

Trooper has been wearing his Clickit every day in the car for the past month, and loves it!

Now some of you may be wondering about my booster seat, which has always been my preferred method of travel in the car….

Sleepypod Clickit Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

Now while Sleepypod can’t recommend using the Clickit any other way than it was designed (for the best safety), I just couldn’t give up riding in my Booster seat! So mom attached one of the tethers to the seatbelt inside my booster seat.

Sleepypod Clickit Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

And then hooked the tether to the criss-cross in the back of the Clickit. While it’s not going to be as safe as attaching with the 3 points, I just couldn’t give up riding in my Booster – but mom still believes this harness is much safer in the car than the standard walking harnesses I used to use.

Sleepypod Clickit Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

Mom plans to maybe add a metal ring to the harness (by sliding it through the webbing) to make attaching the tether easier in the future.

So if you are looking for the best way to keep your pet safe in the car I highly recommend the Sleepypod Clickit. Because you can’t put a price on being “too safe” with your pet’s life!

And now for the best part….

A Car Travel Bed to Keep your Dog Safe

Disclaimer: This product review is NOT SPONSORED by anyone, but does contain affiliate links.

Since I was just a wee pup I have been traveling in the car in style in my booster seat(which also included a seatbelt).

ammo car seat

dachshund carseat

I’ve spent many a car trip in my booster seat over the years.

Ammo the Dachshund // Road Trip to Asheville, North Carolina

In fact I enjoy looking out the window from my seat so much that over the years I had flattened down the edge of it. Comfortable, yes, but safe? Mom begged to differ on that.

Travel Bed that's Safe for your dog in the Car // Ammo the Dachshund

Which is why for my mom’s Birthday a few weeks ago I got this brand new K&H Bucket Booster Seat.

Travel Bed that's Safe for your dog in the Car // Ammo the Dachshund

In fact, my family loves me so much that I ended up with two of them! Yes, due to a little mix-up I got both the large K&H Booster Seat and the small.

Travel Bed that's Safe for your dog in the Car // Ammo the Dachshund

I debated for a while which one to keep. The only difference between the two beds was that the large was about 4″ wider.

Travel Bed that's Safe for your dog in the Car // Ammo the Dachshund

Now even though the larger bed would of given me more room, my current booster seat was the exact same size as the small – so I was already pretty comfortable napping in it. In the end mom decided we should keep the small because it fit a little better in our car. The large would of made it difficult for my mom to put down the other seats in our car without removing the bed first, so since we transport a lot of large items it made more sense to keep the small one.

Travel Bed that's Safe for your dog in the Car // Ammo the Dachshund

Installing my new seat in the car was as easy as threading the seatbelt through the base.

Travel Bed that's Safe for your dog in the Car // Ammo the Dachshund

Underneath the included cushion you can thread your seatbelt through a heavy duty d-ring which comes with 2 seat belts for your dog (or dogs).

Travel Bed that's Safe for your dog in the Car // Ammo the Dachshund

And one of my absolute favorite features of my new bed is the ability to add a heated pad! If you purchase this heat pad you can insert it into the cushion and thread the cord through the front of the bed.

Travel Bed that's Safe for your dog in the Car // Ammo the Dachshund

And it comes with a cord to plug it into your car. I’ve been using mine all the time and it gets nice and warm but not too hot that I wouldn’t want to lay in the bed for a couple hours (especially when I get a little chilly on the farm).

Travel Bed that's Safe for your dog in the Car // Ammo the Dachshund

One of the things I did miss about my old bed was how soft the edges are and they were at the perfect height to rest my head on and look out the window. My new bed has rigged sides, but mom said perhaps she’ll make me a pillow to use with it. We also added a towel underneath the seat cushion to raise it up some so I can still rest my head on the arms and look out the window.

Travel Bed that's Safe for your dog in the Car // Ammo the Dachshund

As you can see it didn’t take me long to adjust to my new ride.

So if you’re looking for a great pet bed for the car I highly recommend the K&H Booster Seat. I’m looking forward to many years of adventures with mine! Ammo the Dachshund

Road Trip with Ammo – Dog Friendly Downtown Charleston, SC

Yesterday I shared my adventures in the Isle of Palms, frolicking on the beach with my best pal Trooper, and having a grand time! But being a beach bum wasn’t the only thing I did on my Thanksgiving vacation.

Road Trip with Ammo - Dog Friendly Downtown Charleston, South Carolina

There was some turkey involved too as I celebrated Thanksgiving with a traditional turkey feast with my family. Trooper and I begged mercifully for some turkey, and even though we didn’t get any, we had fun chowing down on the turkey sausage chews for dogs that mom brought along for us.

Road Trip with Ammo - Dog Friendly Downtown Charleston, South Carolina

After our day of feasting Trooper and I headed into downtown Charleston, South Carolina to check out some of the local scenery.

Road Trip with Ammo - Dog Friendly Downtown Charleston, South Carolina

Before strolling through town we practiced being southern gentleman on a front porch stoop, because I hear that’s what you do when you’re down south!

Road Trip with Ammo - Dog Friendly Downtown Charleston, South Carolina

I even wore my fancy bow tie and poured on the charm, because you never know when a southern lady might be watching!

Road Trip with Ammo - Dog Friendly Downtown Charleston, South Carolina

After my front porch adventure I realized I was getting quite sleepy in the warm southern sun.

Road Trip with Ammo - Dog Friendly Downtown Charleston, South Carolina

I was also quite hungry too! So we decided to take a walk into town to grab something to eat. We ended up at Tabbuli, which had a great little enclosed outdoor dining area that was completely dog friendly!

Road Trip with Ammo - Dog Friendly Downtown Charleston, South Carolina

After some good food it was off to explore Charleston, and I was excited to see that I was sharing the streets with some horses too! These carriage rides around town were pet friendly too, as I saw a couple of small dogs riding in them.

Road Trip with Ammo - Dog Friendly Downtown Charleston, South Carolina

After exploring some of the shops I headed over to Waterfront Park, where I fit right in with my sailor jacket!

I even met some new friends while checking out some of the fountain displays in the park.

Then it was off to Battery Park where I watched the sunset before it was time to head back to my beach rental.

The next day Trooper and I took the short walk from our rental to the beach to say goodbye to the ocean one last time.

Then we packed it into the car and settled in for the long ride back to Pennsylvania.

Making sure to stop for dinner of course!

I hope you enjoyed my Thanksgiving adventures, what kind of fun did you have? Ammo the Dachshund

Road Trip with Ammo – Dog Beach in Isle of Palms, SC

As you know last week I left for a fun Thanksgiving road trip with my family. With over 1500 miles of driving this would be one of my longest road trips to date!

Road Trip with Ammo - Dog Friendly Beaches in Isle of Palms, South Carolina

Not to worry though, because Trooper and I are excellent travelers and we can nap in the car for hours and hours.

Road Trip with Ammo - Dog Friendly Beaches in Isle of Palms, South Carolina

Trooper even snores!

Road Trip with Ammo - Dog Friendly Beaches in Isle of Palms, South Carolina

Despite our excellent traveling skills, we did make a few pitstops for dinner and a couple bathroom breaks.

Road Trip with Ammo - Dog Friendly Beaches in Isle of Palms, South Carolina

And then finally after about 14 hours of driving from Pennsylvania to South Carolina we reached our destination. When we awoke the next day I wasted no time in hitting up the beach on Isle of Palms. This time of year the beaches are open all day long to dogs.

Road Trip with Ammo - Dog Friendly Beaches in Isle of Palms, South Carolina

Trooper and I had a lot of energy to expel so we ran and ran to our hearts content.

Road Trip with Ammo - Dog Friendly Beaches in Isle of Palms, South Carolina

Road Trip with Ammo - Dog Friendly Beaches in Isle of Palms, South Carolina

I even made friends with a few dachshund mixes that were staying right next door to my beach house!

Road Trip with Ammo - Dog Friendly Beaches in Isle of Palms, South Carolina

Even though we were a bit farther south, it was still chilly enough in the morning that I preferred the extra warmth of my coats.

Road Trip with Ammo - Dog Friendly Beaches in Isle of Palms, South Carolina

The cool weather didn’t stop me from venturing into the cold water though!

One of my favorite things to do on the beach is to “rescue” crabs from the ocean. I drag them ashore from the sea and then I’m off in search of my next crab that needs saving.

My new favorite thing on the beach though…..bird watching!

Well ok, maybe more like bird chasing.

With a close second being wrestling with my best buddy Trooper on the beach!

By the end of our trip I was becoming such a beach loving dog that I’ve decided when I’m rich and famous I’ll be purchasing a vacation house right on the beach.

Road Trip with Ammo – Thanksgiving in North Carolina

Road Trip with Ammo – Hiking Graveyard Fields in Asheville, North Carolina

My pet-friendly shopping adventures last week in Asheville, North Carolina were quite fun, but as much as I love scoping out a good deal, I enjoy being out in nature so much more.

I made sure to do my fair share of hiking while I was in North Carolina, and one of my favorite hikes was the Graveyard Fields and Waterfalls along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Pet Friendly Hiking along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Asheville, North Carolina // Ammo the Dachshund

This particular 3 mile hike led me over bridges, up mountains and through scenic waterfalls.

Pet Friendly Hiking along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Asheville, North Carolina // Ammo the Dachshund

Most of the time I led our pack of 6 humans and 2 dogs (me and Trooper), mostly because I’m a natural born leader, and also because Trooper was too concerned with herding our pack into a tidy little group than telling us which path to take (I blame his Australian Shepherd mother).

Pet Friendly Hiking along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Asheville, North Carolina // Ammo the Dachshund

I’m an adventuresome hiker, and took to the unbeaten path when possible – climbing rocks and jumping streams are my kind of fun.

When we reached one of our waterfall destinations I wasted no time in urging everyone to climb the cliffside and reach the top.

It was glorious from above, but I quickly realized the decent down wouldn’t be quite as easy.

Pet Friendly Hiking along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Asheville, North Carolina // Ammo the Dachshund

Not to worry though, because even with my shorter than average legs I’m an excellent climber – not to mention I’m in peak physical shape – and I made it safely to the bottom.

I wish I could say the same for my pal Trooper, but he ended up taking the fast track down the mountain over a sheet of ice.

Luckily he has spider legs, and quickly recovered after splashing into the water at the bottom. I only wish I had caught it on film, because I probably would have won the grand prize on America’s Funniest Videos.

3 miles of hiking felt like a breeze to me, and I easily could have done another 10.

Mom and Dad promised we’d come back again someday though, perhaps in warmer weather. I can’t wait to return to Asheville for more hiking adventures.

At the end of the day it was nice to snuggle up in my blankies at the hotel, it feels good to be worn out, and I did need to rest up, because soon it would be THANKSGIVING!

Check back tomorrow to find out how I spent Turkey Day with my family. Ammo the Dachshund
