Ok, full disclosure here, when I was a puppy I failed crate training. Yes, it’s true. I barked and cried and threw out all the stubborn dachshund tricks until my mom and dad caved. That was 6 years ago though, and although I may not be the perfect poster dog for loving my crate, I am learning that it’s not such a bad place to be after all.

As an adult dog I’ve learned that there are many benefits to crate training and I should learn to be one of the many #CrateHappyPets out there.

Reasons why you might need to put your pet in a crate:

  • Your pet becomes injured and needs to be on crate rest
  • Traveling in a carrier by plane or the need to be crated in a hotel to keep pets out of trouble
  • Great for pets with separation anxiety when you leave home
  • Dog agility events where there is a need to kennel pets between events
  • Pet safety and keeping them out of areas that are hazardous

Yet the number one reason that my mom and dad decided to take the plunge and FINALLY crate train me was to keep me from begging for food at dinner time! I guess my cute puppy dog eyes were becoming too much for them to resist!

Since I’m probably not the only dog out there that was/is resistant to crate training I’ve decided to share some of my tips on how I learned to love my kennel!

Ammo’s Tips for Crate Training an Adult Dog:

TIP 1: Pad your dog’s crate with something extra soft! If you have to, double up the dog beds, no dog wants to sleep on the hard plastic bottom of a crate. Simply switching out my crate pad for something extra soft made me want to take naps in there instead of anywhere else! For a bonus you can add a pet-safe heating pad, because that’s just icing on the cake!

TIP 2: Give your dog something extra special when they are in their crate. I love a toy stuffed with peanut butter (and if you freeze it, it lasts even longer – plus there is no risk of choking when mom and dad are gone). In the beginning my mom would let me chew on something tasty inside the crate (while the door was open) to get used to being in there.

TIP 3: Cover the top of your crate with a blanket or crate cover. Us dogs are den animals, and sometimes being snuggled up in a dark area makes us feel safe and secure.

TIP 4: Build duration in the crate slowly over time with routine. My parents started me out with the routine of going into my crate every evening at their dinner time. I started out by just being closed in for a minute or 2 a night, and built up to longer lengths over several months.

TIP 5: Practice your crate training in many different places. You can even play some crate training games with your pup to get them to look forward to going inside.

So hopefully my crate training tips have you all excited to get started with your pup too, now all you need is a crate!

Friday Fetch: Iota GPS Pet Tracker

My mom has been on the lookout for a GPS tracker for me for a long time. I’ve yet to make the plunge into having my every move tracked 24/7 (aside from mom and dad keeping a hawks eye watch on me at all times), mostly because mom claims she hasn’t found the perfect one for me yet.

Then I stumbled across the Iota on Kickstarter, which is the smallest, longest-lasting GPS tracker in the world with a lure of a new nationwide network with no monthly fees (unlike most of it’s counterparts). With only 5 days left to help push the Iota into production on Kickstarter I think I might be ready to take the plunge into having my every move monitored (if only to help my mom and dad sleep sounder)!

Check out the video to find out more about the Iota.

Can I see some ID?

As dogs we wear our names, phone numbers, and addresses around our necks for the world to see. And while this may not bode well for any dogs out there wishing to blend in as members of the secret service and whatnot – I consider my own id tags a badge of honor.

Wearing an ID tag around my neck means that there is someone that loves me and cares whether I return home safely or not – not that I make it a point to go galavanting around the neighborhood in hot pursuit of bunnies or anything. Nah, I’ve certainly never done that before. *wink*

So since wearing my name and number around my neck on a daily basis is a necessity – who says they can’t be stylish at the same time? Recently I picked up a few new ID tags to add to my collection, because you never know which one will go better with your outfit on any given day.

This silver fox I picked up from the ID Store and it dawns the logo of my recent certification of Canine Good Citizen. Ideal for those days when I’m feeling extra citizenly.

Next up is a tag that seems to have been made especially for me (in fact it was) from Cropscotch. You may remember I shared them a few weeks ago during my Friday Fetch Blog Feature. This unique wooden tag reminds me of how super I really am – and it goes great with my bulging muscles, don’t you think?

And my final accessory for the day is an adorable horseshoe tag (from the mascot collection) sent to me from my pals at Blanket Id. This tag is extra special because it contains a website link on the back that tells you everything you need to know about me should I get lost and makes it extra easy to find my human.

Lately I’ve taken to wearing two tags at once – mostly pairing my Blanket Id with one of the others – because really, one can never have too many accessories. You also might notice that each of my id tags has their own Rubit Clip, which is a secure clip that easily lets you move id tags from collar to collar – because one can also never have too many collars! But we’ll have to save my collar collection for another post.

Along with wearing proper id I am also microchipped. And while I’m still not certain if said microchip isn’t just there to transmit secret data to the government for some big conspiracy – Mom assures me she had it implanted for my safety only. The verdict is still out on that one. Ammo the Dachshund

Friday Fetch: Pet First Aid Kits

This week I got stung by a bee! I know the horror! My mom noticed pretty quickly that I had been stung because I stopped barking at a deer in my backyard to lick my leg. After a few minutes my leg started to swell a bit – and then about an hour later I started to get some swelling under my eye and on my nose. So at 9:30pm my dad rushed off to the pharmacy to get me some benedryl, and after eating 1/2 a tablet and sleeping it off, I woke up in the morning feeling much better.

After my little bee sting incident it got me thinking about being safe – and keeping a pet first aid kit with me in the car and at home just in case anything were to happen.

So I decided to do a little Friday Fetch round-up today of some of my favorite pet first aid kits out there.
