Pet Friendly Road Trip Adventures: Shenandoah National Park

Adventure Awaits with Ammo the DachshundIf you’ve been following along with me on Facebook then you know I went on a super fun road trip last week to some amazing pet friendly locations. Yesterday I shared my first stop along the way, the National Mall, and today I’m going to share my next pit stop, the Shenandoah National Park!

Shenandoah National Park with Ammo the Dachshund

The Shenandoah National Park is over 200,000 acres of protected lands that is home to deer, birds, black bears and more!

Within minutes of pulling into the park I had already seen a newborn deer cross the road in front of us with it’s mom, and if that weren’t exciting enough, you’ll never guess what I spotted next!

Black Bear in Shenandoah National Park with Ammo the Dachshund

Oh yes, that’s right, I spotted a Black Bear! And not just one black bear, but I saw two….one of which had bear cubs with it (unfortunately my camera crew missed that shot!).

And in case you were wondering what I did when I spotted the bear….I just took it all in. No barking, not one peep, because I may have been safely in my car, but there was no way I was going to give that bear any excuse to eat me! I’m no dummy!

Dinner on Skyline Drive with Ammo the Dachshund

After all that black bear excitement I took a breather to eat my dinner overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains on Skyline drive. Best dinner ever!

After I finished up dinner I checked into my pet friendly accommodations at the Skyland Resort for the night.

My room for the night was pretty basic, but the views were so breathtaking.

Within walking distance of my accommodations was a nice little restaurant that had a pet friendly patio for “to-go” orders. I was lucky enough to eat dinner and breakfast overlooking the blue ridge mountains.

As a bonus there was a nice little bluff that was perfect for watching the sunset from.

After a restful nights sleep it was time to pack up and head out on my next adventure. But before I could hit the road, there was one last thing to do.

Millers Head Trail // Shenandoah National Park // Ammo the Dachshund

Hiking in Shenandoah! The Shenandoah National Park has several trails that pets are not allowed on, so I made sure to hit up one that was, Millers Head.

It had a few nice overlooks of the mountains, and was a relatively shady trail, which was nice on such a hot day.

Pet Friendly Road Trip // Ammo the Dachshund

As I headed out from Shenandoah I enjoyed taking in the scenery along Skyline Drive which runs 105 miles along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Shenandoah National Park. It’s the only public road through the park, and honestly makes a road trip that much better with it’s views!

And of course I had to stop to take a few selfies along the way!

The journey ahead to my next destination was long…

What do you think your dog would have done had it spotted a black bear like I did?

Pet Friendly Road Trip Adventures: The National Mall, D.C.

Adventure Awaits with Ammo the DachshundRoad trips are something I have been doing since I was just a wee pup, and I’m lucky enough that when my family sets out on an adventure they’re always looking for pet friendly locations so that I can tag along too!

Last week I set out on a week long trek to reach my final destination, the annual BlogPaws Pet Blogging Conference. I have tons to share about my week on the road, but I figured I start with my first stop, The National Mall!

Pet Friendly Travel - The National Mall, Washington D.C. with Ammo the Dachshund

If you’re not familiar with the National Mall, it is a great symbol of the United States. The National Mall is over 1,000 acres of park space in our capital city, Washington, D.C. Inside the National Mall are many memorial parks with iconic monuments and memorials.

Pet Friendly Washington D.C. and the Lincoln Memorial with Ammo the Dachshund

I was lucky enough to visit the National Mall on Memorial Day so there was lots going on to see! The National Mall is pet friendly for all leashed pets and the only areas pets aren’t allowed are on the walkways at the Vietnam and Korean War Memorials and inside the Washington Monument. As a general rule dogs aren’t allowed inside any buildings and covered areas.

National Monument // Pet Friendly Travel with Ammo the Dachshund

My first stop was the Washington Monument! It was built to honor George Washington, (the U.S.’s first president) and towers 555 feet over Washington, D.C.

Washington Monument in Pet Friendly D.C. with Ammo the Dachshund

It was a fairly warm day, but with a cool breeze blowing through the capitol I was loving every minute of it! What a special place to be on a day to remember those who lost their lives fighting for my country.

Pet Friendly Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool with Ammo the Dachshund

Eventually I made my way over to the Reflecting Pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial. I spotted a family of ducklings enjoying the cool water and couldn’t wait to take a dip with them! Sadly mom said she didn’t think the park staff would be too happy if I went for a swim, so alas I didn’t even get to dip a toe in.

Pet Friendly Lincoln Memorial with Ammo the Dachshund

The Lincoln Memorial itself was bustling with visitors and surprisingly I didn’t see many other dogs.

Eventually I made my way to the top of the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and while I wasn’t allowed to go inside the monument, I did grab a selfie with my mom and dad on the steps. Apparently we’re all behind the times too, because I didn’t have a selfie stick like the many other visitors that were at the National Mall. I guess I better step my selfie game up!

Police Horse on the National Mall with Ammo the Dachshund

While I didn’t see many dogs during my National Mall excursion, I did spot several mounted police officers. Even though I was only a day into my road trip, it made me miss my ponies even more!

Pet Friendly Vietnam Memorial with Ammo the Dachshund

I also made my way over to the Vietnam Memorial. The area was packed with visitors on Memorial Day and I hung back (pets aren’t allowed on the pathway at the Vietnam Memorial) while Dad went up to check it out. A little side fact, did you know my PopPop actually fought in Vietnam?

Pet Friendly White House, Washington D.C. // Ammo the Dachshund

My last stop before I waved goodbye to the National Mall was of course the White House! I had high hopes I’d spot the Obama Family pets, Sunny & Bo, running on the lawn, but they must have been taking their mid-afternoon nap. Although I did spot a box of bees on the back lawn, who knew the president had honeybee pets?

Pet Friendly Lincoln Memorial with Ammo the Dachshund

I had a blast checking out the National Mall on Memorial Day, and I even got to watch a little bit of the parade and met so many dachshund loving people on my adventure.

Next on my road trip, I was headed to Shenandoah National Park! So stay tuned tomorrow for even more fun, and find out what happened when I came face to face with a BEAR! Ammo the Dachshund // Blog Signature // Celebrity

Emmi-Pet Dog Dental Cleaner Review & Giveaway

Disclaimer: This post and giveaway is brought to you by Emmi-Dent. All opinions are my own and I only share products I think you will love!

Emmi-Pet Dog Dental Toothbrush Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

My new friend at Emmi-Dent recently sent me their Emmi-Pet Ultrasound Toothbrush to test out. I was super excited to try what is essentially an “electric toothbrush” for pets.

Emmi-Pet Dog Dental Toothbrush Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

What makes the Emmi-Pet different than a regular toothbrush for your dog is that it generates ultrasound with a patented ultrasonic microchip that is embedded inside the brush head.

This tiny chip creates up to 84 million ultrasonic impulses per minute and transmits them via the bristles and the special Emmi-pet toothpaste onto the teeth giving your pet a superior cleaning.

Emmi-Pet Dog Dental Toothbrush Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

Just like electric toothbrushes for humans, it comes with a charging station and toothbrush heads for big and small dogs (which you can also order replacements for when they wear out).

Emmi-Pet Dog Dental Toothbrush Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

Now I know what you’re probably thinking. An electric toothbrush is great and all, but there is no way my dog is going to let me put a vibrating toothbrush in their mouth. But guess what, it doesn’t actually vibrate – at least not enough that you or your dog could even tell it’s moving.

Emmi-Pet Dog Dental Toothbrush Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

The Emmi-Pet is making those 84 million ultrasonic movements a minute so fast that you can’t even tell. And to clean your pet’s teeth you don’t even need to actually bush, just simply hold the toothbrush to your pets teeth for 5 seconds per tooth.

Emmi-Pet Dog Dental Toothbrush Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

I’ve never been a big fan of getting my teeth brushed (I tolerate it), but this I didn’t mind at all. I sat quietly while mom held the brush up to my teeth.

The ultrasonic impulses are able to penetrate teeth and gums destroying bacteria and germs where bristles can’t reach. I even allowed mom to reach my back teeth with the brush – something she previously had trouble with when using a regular toothbrush that required brushing. This is essential in reducing and protecting against periodontal (gum) disease.

Emmi-Pet Dog Dental Toothbrush Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

Mom even took the human equivalent to this toothbrush for a spin, and said she noticed her teeth did feel a bit cleaner after using it for a few days. The human version comes with vibration in the hand piece, so it’s more similar to most electric toothbrushes you may have seen, but still has the ultrasonic vibrations as well as the patented chip technology in the brush head.

The Emmi-Pet Ultrasound Toothbrush retails for $199, but you can get 20% off with code AMMO20. I’m loving this product and can’t wait to see how much whiter my teeth are in a few months!

And now for the best part….

Watch What Happens When Dog Gets New Carpet

So recently my mom and dad decided to upgrade my living room carpet situation to something a little thicker, a little softer, and a lot more “scratch your back” friendly. After a little shopping trip to the West Elm Outlet in my area my parents came home with this fun rug…

Spring Bark and Where I’m Headed Next

I’ve got some exciting news! Recently I found out that I’m a finalist in the BlogPaws Nose-to-Nose Awards for the Best Dog Blog & Best Pet Blog Photo.

Ammo the Dachshund Studio Photos

It’s enough to make me feel like a celebrity!

What makes the Nose-to-Nose awards a little different is that this is the only pet industry awards on which pet bloggers and micro-bloggers are judged on the expertise, performance, and creativity of their blog. Each category is judged by a distinguished panel of professionals, and not by popular vote. So don’t worry I won’t be begging for votes (not that I’ve ever been a fan of that anyway), now begging for cookies, that’s another story!

Ammo the Dachshund Studio Photos

Oh gosh, I can just feel the love!

The best part is that winners will be revealed in an exclusive red carpet ceremony at the BlogPaws Annual Conference in Nashville, Tennessee at the end of May.

My Bags are Packed // Ammo the Dachshund

You know, like where the best trees to pee on in Tennessee are, and what kind of squirrels they have in Virginia….the important stuff.

Everyday Dog Gear

Noodle and Friends Executive Coat Product Review // Ammo the Dachshund

I like to think that I’m a pretty stylish dog. I love to shop, and over the years I’ve tested and tried some of the best dog products on the market. I like to think that you (my readers) agree, because one of the common questions I get in e-mails, blog comments, and social media is where did I get a particular product I am seen wearing.

Horse Show Helper

Iron Horse Farm Show Helper // Ammo the Dachshund

Over the weekend we held the last of our series of horse events at the farm for the season. I’m always the bestest of helpers, see there’s me guarding the arena equipment before the show starts!

Iron Horse Farm Show Helper // Ammo the Dachshund

I take on many duties when event day arrives – here’s me and Trooper helping to set up the food booth.

I also help to direct people to the Secretary table – where they need to sign up for the event.

But my number one job on event day is always the meet and greet committee. I’ve had lots of practice with this being a shop dog!

Fair Hill International 2014

Just like last year, I attended the Fairhill International event to watch one of the most prestigious international three day horse events in the world this past weekend.

Ammo the Dachshund visits Fairhill International

This time I was a seasoned pro on the school bus ride over to the grounds. I made sure to assure all the other dogs on the bus that we weren’t in fact headed for school (because who goes to school on a Sunday?).

Ammo the Dachshund visits Fairhill International

My first stop on the grounds…..lunch! And with lots of choices to choose from I begged mom to get the steak sandwich wrap….mmmm…..steak.

Ammo the Dachshund visits Fairhill International

Next I hit up the shopping tents – in which all the venders commented on how I was the best dressed dog there! (I do try my best)

Then it was time for the main event….Show Jumping! I spent the afternoon watching as Jennie Brannigan and her horse, Cambalda, took home the Gold!

By the end of the day I was exhausted from “riding every stride” with the competitors as I cheered them on!

Good news is I have an entire year to rest up for next year’s event! Ammo the Dachshund

Dog Friendly Storage Space

My mom and dad have been on a mission this year to redo our kitchen (they’ve been saving their pennies for years and years), so in order to move ahead with operation new kitchen we’ve recently had to do a little re-organizing around the house. One of the first areas to tackle has apparently been my stuff!

Dog Friendly Storage Space // Ammo the Dachshund

I have a few designated areas around my house where most of my gear (coats, harnesses, collars, leashes, etc) collect, one of them being this little nook in the dining room.

Dog Friendly Storage Space // Ammo the Dachshund

As well as this closet in the kitchen which holds a lot of my gear as well as dog food, treats, and other stuff.

Dog Friendly Storage Space // Ammo the Dachshund

As you can see my little closet has become quite cluttered! Mom told me that I would need to clean it out completely as well, because it was going to become the new home for our pantry (once it’s gutted, painted, and redone). Of course I was very concerned about where all my stuff (especially the cookies) were going to end up!

Dog Friendly Storage Space // Ammo the Dachshund

Mom said not to worry, she had a plan, and off she went to Target to pick me up this handy organizing shelf on sale for $40.

She then relocated my treats and dog food to a cabinet in the kitchen and I was left with the task of re-organizing all the rest of my gear!

Dog Friendly Storage Space // Ammo the Dachshund

The end result was this super pretty (and super organized) pet-friendly storage to house all of my gear just inside the backdoor of my house.

Dog Friendly Storage Space // Ammo the Dachshund

With a little help from my mom I sorted everything so it’s much easier to find!

Dog Friendly Storage Space // Ammo the Dachshund

With the bulk of the storage housing my coats, fleeces and jackets (one can never have too many articles of clothing), I’m quite pleased with how it turned out.

So what do you think of my new pet friendly storage? How do you organize all of your dog’s gear around the house? Ammo the Dachshund
