Frozen Lake

Lake Dogs // Summer // Ammo the Dachshund

On Valentine’s Day my mom and dad surprised me and told me that we’d be taking a trip to the lake. I couldn’t wait as it’s one of my favorite spots and I was looking forward to romping in the sand!

Frozen Lake // Ammo the Dachshund

Only when we got to the lake and I sat on the edge of the dock and looked out over the water….things looked a little different.

Frozen Lake // Ammo the Dachshund

Actually, it looked a lot different.

Frozen Lake // Ammo the Dachshund

I felt like I had been duped. I mean where was the warm water, the paddle boards, ….. where was my lake?

Frozen Lake // Ammo the Dachshund

But then, mom told me that we were standing on the lake.

Frozen Lake // Ammo the Dachshund

I mean holy cow, there was water under there? Frozen water?

Frozen Lake // Ammo the Dachshund

And sure enough, with a bit of digging I uncovered my long lost lake. Who would of thought?

Frozen Lake // Ammo the Dachshund

Of course being Valentine’s Day and all, mom and dad made me take a family photo. And did you know that almost 8 years ago my mom and dad got engaged on this lake (on a row boat)? Well now you do.

Frozen Lake // Ammo the Dachshund

As much as I enjoyed frozen lake, I did sort of wish it was summer, because frozen lake is a bit more “frozen” and I started to get a little cold as the sun set.

Frozen Lake // Ammo the Dachshund

Don’t worry though, because I brought along my secret weapon against all things cold….my mom!

Frozen Lake // Ammo the Dachshund

Yup, just the right amount of Valentine’s warmth from my mom! But next time, I think I’d much rather visit the lake on a warm, sunny day! Ammo the Dachshund

So how did you spend your Valentine’s Day?

When Goats Run Races

When Goats Run Races // Ammo the Dachshund

On Sunday I attended the 2014 Sly Fox Goat Races – a first for me!

When Goats Run Races // Ammo the Dachshund

I hopped on the bus at the fairgrounds in the hopes of seeing some exciting racing!

When Goats Run Races // Ammo the Dachshund

The turnout to the event was much larger than I expected, especially since for the better part of the morning we were stuck under a raincloud.

When Goats Run Races // Ammo the Dachshund

I wasn’t going to let a little rain stop me from having a good time though, so I pulled up my hood and got ready for some fun!

When Goats Run Races // Ammo the Dachshund

First I hit up the food tent and ate some yummy Beerwurst, I’m drooling still thinking about it.

When Goats Run Races // Ammo the Dachshund

After my belly was full I decided to mingle and check out the goat racing competition.

When Goats Run Races // Ammo the Dachshund

Tension was high, as the goats argued amongst each other about who they thought would come out on top and have the honor of getting the ceremonial bock beer named after them.

When Goats Run Races // Ammo the Dachshund

I sniffed out all the competitors and secretly made my bets on who I thought would win.

When Goats Run Races // Ammo the Dachshund

I also made sure to keep looking over my shoulder, because I don’t trust anything with horns!

When Goats Run Races // Ammo the Dachshund

Not only did I meet goats at the races, but there were lots of dogs there too, like this big guy who had a go pro camera strapped to his back.

When Goats Run Races // Ammo the Dachshund

I also met this guy, Chase the mini Australian Shepherd. He reminded me of my best buddy Trooper, but much more my size!

When Goats Run Races // Ammo the Dachshund

While I bounced around the event I attracted quite a bit of attention from the children there (as well as the adults that couldn’t help but want to take my picture).

When Goats Run Races // Ammo the Dachshund

The kids were my favorite part though, because where there’s kids, there’s food!

When Goats Run Races // Ammo the Dachshund

Finally it was time for the goat races to start, or so I heard, because I couldn’t see anything on account of being so short! #shortdogproblems

When Goats Run Races // Ammo the Dachshund

Thankfully mom and dad helped me work my way to the front of the crowd so that I’d had a much better view.

When Goats Run Races // Ammo the Dachshund

And before I knew it the goats were off….well kinda. I’m not sure what I was expecting, maybe because I’m used to seeing and racing in the dachshund races – well goats aren’t quite as speedy!

It was quite comical to watch actually, and at the end of the day it was announced that the goat, Spartacus was the champion!

But in a major upset on monday it was re-announced that the new winner was Jixxer after a photo surfaced of his leg crossing the finish line ahead of Spartacus. So much drama at the goat races! I guess better luck next year Spartacus!Ammo the Dachshund

P.S. I hear the champion Jixxer is up for adoption! Maybe next year I’ll have my own goat to enter, as the ponies on the farm have been asking for a goat buddy for a long time now!

The Goshen Country Fair is for Dogs

The Goshen Country Fair is exactly what you think of when you picture a country fair. Livestock, carnival rides and games, music, blueberry pie, cotton candy, and dogs!

Goshen Country Fair // Dog Friendly Event // Ammo the Dachshund

This past weekend I got to attend the fair for some good old fashioned hometown fun!

Goshen Country Fair // Dog Friendly Event // Ammo the Dachshund

To kick off my adventure I checked out the Pet Show hosted by the SPCA which was open to family dogs who wanted to compete in categories like cutest puppy and best costume. This year I decided not to enter, but instead observe my competition for next year!

Goshen Country Fair // Dog Friendly Event // Ammo the Dachshund

Plus it gave me a better spot to check out all the cute ladies!

Goshen Country Fair // Dog Friendly Event // Ammo the Dachshund

After the pet show I wandered over to the 4-H livestock tents to make some new friends. The sheep were a little sheepish though, and it seemed no one was interested in being my BFF.

Goshen Country Fair // Dog Friendly Event // Ammo the Dachshund

The cows proved to be a little more interesting – or at least their smell was quite intriguing to me! I’m trying to convince mom that I need my own cows on the farm now.

Goshen Country Fair // Dog Friendly Event // Ammo the Dachshund

I then took some time to check out all the fun booths and fair items, and when mom started to zero in on a booth that was offering free nail trims – I decided it would be better if we checked out the carnival games instead!

Goshen Country Fair // Dog Friendly Event // Ammo the Dachshund

I tried my paw at some of the squirt gun games – but alas my aim wasn’t quite up to par to beat the small child sitting next to me!

Goshen Country Fair // Dog Friendly Event // Ammo the Dachshund

Dad even tried to win me a stuffed animal at the dart game – but it seems our luck had run out on the carnival games.

Goshen Country Fair // Dog Friendly Event // Ammo the Dachshund

So instead we picked up some Goshen Homemade Doughnuts and decided to wait for the evening’s entertainment to begin.

Goshen Country Fair // Dog Friendly Event // Ammo the Dachshund

They had live music and even a pie eating contest to entertain me while I waited for the big act of the night to take the stage.

Goshen Country Fair // Dog Friendly Event // Ammo the Dachshund

The Kountry K-9 Show was just up my alley, as a group of rescue trick dogs performed some pretty cool tricks on stage. I was secretly hoping they might ask me to join them!

Goshen Country Fair // Dog Friendly Event // Ammo the Dachshund

At the end of the night I waved goodbye to the ferris wheel, and felt grateful that dogs weren’t allowed on the carnival rides because I’m perfectly happy keeping all 4 feet on the ground!

Mounted Games and Versatility with the Ponies

On Sunday we held another competition at the farm.

Ammo the Dachshund // Mounted Games Competition on the Farm

When we hold competitions, they typically aren’t what you think of when you hear “horse show”. No, you won’t see any fancied up ponies parading around an arena earning marks for good looks. Instead you’ll see handy ponies navigating obstacles in our versatility trail and top speed racers vying for a first place finish in our mounted games events. It’s totally my kind of event, which is why I volunteered my services to judge.

Ammo the Dachshund // Mounted Games Competition on the Farm

Ammo the Dachshund // Mounted Games Competition on the Farm

We had a variety of ages and skill levels attempt our challenging obstacle course, all of which were hoping to win the jackpot cash prize!

Ammo the Dachshund // Mounted Games Competition on the Farm

I put on my most serious face, and took to judging the riders with great scrutiny. Looking for those who worked well with their ponies, and navigated the obstacles with ease.

Ammo the Dachshund // Mounted Games Competition on the Farm

As you can imagine, it’s quite exhausting to use your serious face all day long.

Ammo the Dachshund // Mounted Games Competition on the Farm

And inevitably I had to take a short nap to regain my strength so I could score the mounted games portion of the day.

Ammo the Dachshund // Mounted Games Competition on the Farm

Scoring the mounted games events is quite difficult, because not only do you have to keep your eyes peeled for rule infractions, but you also have to keep a close watch on the finish line in order to catch the placings. It’s such a challenging job that I enlisted to help of several scribes.

Sometimes the riders come into the finish neck and neck and you really have to pay attention!

Ammo the Dachshund // Mounted Games Competition on the Farm

Don’t worry – I was on the job the whole entire time!

Ammo the Dachshund // Mounted Games Competition on the Farm

Ok, fine, there may have been a quick nap between races – but I swear that was it! Ammo the Dachshund

Our next competition on the farm will be held on Sunday, October 7th. If you are in the Chester County, PA area I hope you’ll consider coming out to compete or cheer on the teams! It’s always such a fun day! More details here.

Brandywine Hills Point-to-Point

This Sunday, April 1st (weather permitting) I will be attending the Brandywine Hills Point-to-Point Races in West Chester, Pa with my pal Minnow the Painting Pony.  If you are unfamiliar with what a Point-to-Point is, it’s essentially an amateur horse racing event meant for fox hunting horses in which they race over fences.

ammo the dachshund 2012 pa horse world expo

Neither Minnow nor I have been to a Point-to-Point before, and although they do feature races where ponies are eligible (ridden by children) we won’t be there to race.

ammo the dachshund with the painting pony

Instead we’ll be entertaining the crowds in the Children’s Activities Area from 11 – 3:30pm. So if you are in the area on Sunday make sure you stop on by my booth and visit! Gates open at 11am  and tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for children. You can check out more of the events I will be attending this year on my calendar.

P.S. I promise to jump through my hoop way better than this if you come to visit me!

Horse Show Dog

Being a horse show dog is a VERY tough job. We don’t get the glory of winning the fancy ribbons and trophies like the ponies do, instead we are behind the scenes taking over the jobs that no one else wants to do.

Take my job for example. I’m usually on patrol duty, in charge of guarding all of the tack and the trailer.

The hours are long, and usually it’s hot. But someone has to keep away the chickens….

…and the cows!

Stop giving me the stink eye cow! I’m watching you!

It could be worse though, I could be stuck on ribbon rack duty like my pal Trooper.

He has no idea that all the ponies laugh at him.

I have to admit, I laugh too.

Over the River and Through the Woods…

Except this time I wasn’t going to grandma’s house! No, instead me and Trooper loaded into the family car and headed to the Pocono Mountains – to the family cabin!

Of course the first thing I did when I got there was run around like a maniac. Wouldn’t you?

After a few good laps, the next logical thing was to find dig a hole.

Only, I got a little carried away in my hole digging (I might need therapy) and before I knew it – I was stuck!

Don’t worry, everyone eventually dug me out – and mom reached in and pulled me to safety. I was a little muddy and tired – but that didn’t stop me from getting back in the hole TWO MORE TIMES (each complete with their own rescue mission). hehe.

Apparently after the third rescue everyone was getting a little tired of saving me (although I thought it was a blast) so I had to sit in time out in the cabin while mom barricaded the holes under the shed.

I promised not to do it again, so mom finally forgave me and let me outside to play with Trooper.

Look at me mom! I’m just like a dolphin!

And of course we HAD to take the row boat out onto the pond.

And to no one’s surprise, Trooper fell out within the first few minutes. I told him he should have worn a life vest (he sucks at swimming – even for a half Labrador).

So I gave Trooper a few pointers, and he actually started looking pretty good.

1..2..3..stroke. 1..2..3..stroke. 1..2..3..stroke.

I said use the towel Trooper!!

I think I see a tadpole!

After our boat ride I decided to give Trooper some more swimming lessons. “I said 10 more laps Trooper!”

Oh brother, he’s learned nothing!

This is just totally embarrassing for him. It’s the attack of the “Labra-dud” (you know, because he can’t swim). hehe.

Well, even though I got to run and play at the cabin while everyone else did “spring cleaning” – it was still an exhausting day!

This was fun and all, but when are we going home? There is a dog bed at my house that is calling my name!

In the Doghouse

No, I’m not grounded. Are you kidding? I’m a perfect angel ALL THE TIME, most of the time, sometimes. *wink* *wink*

Actually though, I am in the Doghouse. Doghouse Burgers that is. Yeah I know, coolest name EVER! And the best part is that Doghouse Burgers is located just across the street from my mom’s shop in town. So when I’m being an extra perfect Angel, mom sometimes takes me over there for dinner. And if I’m really really good, I even get a taste of the best burgers in town. yum yum

Is my meal ready yet?

I think I’m gonna need a doggie bag

P.S. they also have hot dogs. But don’t worry, they aren’t made from cute weiner dogs, I checked.
