Last Days of Summer

The cool weather is rolling in and it’s time to squeeze in those last little bits of summer. Ice cream cones and a dip in the pool seem like the perfect way to soak in every last bit of it. Before I know it it will be time to break out my sweaters!

Product Review: Ruffwear’s Swamp Cooler

Disclaimer: This review is brought to you by Ruffwear.

Lets face it, Summer is HOT! And when you’re a dog who’s covered in fur it can feel even hotter. So when I came across the Swamp Cooler Vest for dogs from Ruffwear it sounded like a great solution to keep us dogs cool in the heat. So when Ruffwear offered me up the chance to take their redesigned Swamp Cooler for a spin I decided to let my best friend Trooper test this one out. Trooper likes to tag along on the trail with the horses, but the summer (and his extra thick coat of hair) sometimes makes it just too hot for him to do so.

How does it work?  Simply soak the vest with water, wring it out and put it on your dog! The evaporative cooling process will move heat away and bring cool moist air towards your dog.

The Swamp Cooler was redesigned this year with three distinct functional layers. The outer layer blocks the sun, and is highly breathable to assist in the evaporative process and keep air moving through the vest to cool the inner layers. The middle layer is the absorbent layer that holds the water after you soak it. And the comfortable inner mesh layer wicks water from the mid-layer to the dog’s body keeping them cool.

On an average day tagging along with the horses at the farm this is what Trooper looks like in the summer:

So when the Swamp Cooler arrived I was anxious to see if it kept my working buddy any cooler!

We started off by hosing the vest and wringing it out before strapping it onto Trooper.

Trooper is wearing the size medium, which fit him perfectly. I’d be curious if some of the smaller sizes would work on Dachshunds or not – our never ending quest to find products that accommodate our big chests and long backs can sometimes be a bit difficult.

I then gave Trooper strict instructions to run his little heart out after those ponies and report back to me if it kept him any cooler. I on the other hand hung back to guard the farm because my short little legs just aren’t made for keeping up on the trail!

Then off Trooper went with my ponies, wagging his little stubby tail the whole way!

When Trooper returned back to the farm he reported feeling much cooler. His tongue wasn’t hanging out as much, and it took him much less time to slow his heart rate back down. We both agree that this vest would be great to taking on the hiking trail, summer walks, or even just wearing outside in the backyard in hot weather – especially for dogs that work hard or have a thicker coat. The cooling features of this vest seem to last about an hour before it needs to be re-wet again, but as long as you bring a water bottle with you (or stop at a creek like Trooper sometimes does on his trail rides), you will always have a method of making it cool again for your dog.

Trooper and I highly recommend this product and hopefully you will be fetching your own Swamp Cooler from Ruffwear soon!

Day at the Pool

Day at the Pool // Ammo the Dachshund

One of the great things about the summer is getting to spend the day at my mom mom & pop pop’s pool.

Day at the Pool // Ammo the Dachshund

I wouldn’t say that I love to swim or anything, but floating around on a raft in the water is a pretty good time.

I’ve become sort of an expert at patrolling the waters, making sure no one drowns and that everyone plays by the rules. I run a tight ship at my pool!

Now if only I could get someone to bring me out a tray of hot dogs – I think I might never leave!

My Personal Puddle

My Personal Puddle // Ammo the Dachshund

It’s been raining in Pennsylvania A LOT, like as in thunderstorms most nights and sometimes all day long. But it’s also been hot hot hot. So while I hate that the rain sometimes puts a damper on my plans, I’m loving that it’s created a personal puddle on the farm just for me to cool off in.

My Personal Puddle // Ammo the Dachshund

It may not be crystal clear waters, but it’s the perfect place to cool off, and maybe fetch a few sticks in too.

With just a couple more inches of rain I’d have to slap on my life vest and call it my own personal swimming puddle.

If anyone needs me I’ll be dipping my paws into my personal puddle, and dreaming I’m at the beach chasing crabs out to sea! Keep cool friends! Ammo the Dachshund

Kayaking Adventure

Kayaking Adventure // Ammo the Dachshund // Marshcreek Lake

Over the weekend it got hot hot hot, and instead of just laying around the house panting I decided to go to the lake!

I’m no stranger to the Marshcreek Lake, in fact I took my first paddleboarding adventure out there just last year.

This time though I decided to take to the lake via kayak!

It’s Summer and it’s hot. So you’ll have to excuse me if all I do today is nap on the bed in the cool cool air conditioning. That is all.

Summer Days by the Pool

ammo the dachshund at the pool

This past weekend was a hot one, so to beat the heat I headed over to my MomMom & PopPop’s house to take a dip in the pool.

Floating around the pool on my raft can be quite enjoyable when the temperatures reach near 90F.

ammo the dachshund at the pool

I dubbed myself Captain Ammo and invited my cousins to come play with me aboard my ship flotation device!

ammo the dachshund at the pool

My cousin Chase volunteered to be first mate and we embarked on a wild adventure at sea pool.

ammo the dachshund at the pool

Chase and I discussed where we thought the buried treasure might be – and we both agreed that it must be under the sea pool.

Our plans to rescue said treasure were foiled though when we realized that I forgot to pack my floaties. AAARRRGH!

Don’t worry though, Mom signed me up for swim lessons so our next adventure will be sure to lead us to gold and riches.

Pool Boy

After a week of 100 plus degree weather in Pennsylvania I finally couldn’t take it anymore! It was time for a pool day!

ammo the dachshund pool boy

Thankfully my mom-mom & pop-pop have a pool in their backyard. And who was I to pass up an invitation to come swimming?

ammo the dachshund pool boy

I wasted no time in grabbing myself a raft – doesn’t it look like I can walk on water?

ammo the dachshund pool boy

Believe it or not, this was actually my first time in the pool – and I decided all by myself that rafting would be the perfect way to cool off on this hot day. I’m so smart – who wants to waste their time doing the doggie paddle anyway.

Now that I’m properly cooled, who wants to take me for ice cream?
