Life Lesson Number One

Now that I’m a big brother it’s my duty to teach Baby P all the important stuff. #1 on the life lesson list, how to dig a proper hole.

Rescue on the Farm

As you can see, Baby P was super excited to learn this life lesson. That’s my girl, she totally gets it. You just never know when you’re going to need to dig something, so always come prepared with those two little shovels on the bottom of your arms!

Dirt filled baths, and dirty finger nails are totally in our future.

Up next, how to navigate to the critters in the woods. We’ve got a whole lot of life lessons to get through this summer, so we better get started!

Following Instinct - Ammo the Dachshund finds a Groundhog Hole

Some dogs are born with it, some dogs aren’t. And I can’t help that I was cursed blessed with this amazing nose that can lead me to a groundhog hole deep in the woods, through thickets and brush, where no one else knows it exists.

My poor pal Trooper doesn’t have this gift, sometimes I’m surprised he even knows which way is up. (love ya Troop!)

Without me the world would be full of unknown groundhog holes, unattended, and unwatched.

And for some reason, I don’t think my special skills are very appreciated around here!

Sigh. It’s an uphill battle for me every single day. The struggle is real my friends. #DachshundLifeStruggle

Throwback Thursday: Earthdog

Way back in the day when I was just a year old mom and dad took me to my very first Earthdog competition. Immediately I took to tracking and “hunting” the rats, as seen in this throwback video:

However, my young self hadn’t quite grasped the concept of hunting underground (I know can you believe it!), so I would bypass the tunnels and head straight for the rats!

I mean can you really blame me…..I was looking for the shortcut!

Fast forward to today, and I’m pretty sure finding a rat in a tunnel would be a piece of cake!

Holes are my specialty now!

Was your dog a natural born hunter like I was? Or did it develop over time, like my hole excavating skills? Ammo the Dachshund

The Instincts of a True Hunter

Being a Dachshund means that I was born to hunt, most specifically I was born to hunt down holes! So when an opportunity presents itself for some real-life burrowing practice I can’t possibly pass up the ability to show off my skills. After all I am an expert hunter and burrower.

It’s a shame their wasn’t any groundhogs in there, but regardless I just can’t ever pass up a hole! Ammo the Dachshund

The Hunt for My Missing Collar

It’s true, on Monday night I lost my collar somewhere on the farm. My pretty one from the Polka Dog Line at Target, complete with my new Blanket ID tag, and my new Cropscotch tag, and even my two new Rubit Clips. Sigh, I was sort of in the dog house when I told mom I had lost all of those things at once. And the worst part was, I couldn’t even remember where I lost it.

So the next day mom and I set out to search the farm for my collar. WE LOOKED EVERYWHERE! Needless to say with 20 acres to search it didn’t turn up.

Then, in a sudden turn of events that day, I accidentally lost my back-up collar! I must have been so engrossed in digging out some local groundhogs that it slipped off my neck. This time we were able to find my collar nearby one of the holes, which made us come to the conclusion that my other collar must be down one of the holes too!

So the very next day we set out on a digging mission (oh happy day) to find my collar.

Ammo the Dachshund // The Hunt for the Missing Collar

Armed with shovels and the super strength of my digging paws the mission was simple – dig up groundhog holes!

Ammo the Dachshund // The Hunt for the Missing Collar

The whole time I just kept thinking those pesky groundhogs were parading around down there with my prized collar (I am sort of a fashion icon).

I worked myself up into a frenzy over them wearing my collar and ended up doing most of the digging, surprise surprise.

But despite my best digging efforts I was unable to locate my lost collar. Tear. I can’t bear the thought of those groundhogs with something of mine!

But the very worst part was, when we were all done, mom filled in all of my holes!!!! This is just horrible, I’m going to have to pull double digging duty tomorrow to un-dig them all. Sigh. Ammo the Dachshund

If you Dig, I will Come

Trooper’s new house on the farm has officially been started, and the digging of the foundation is my favoritest part!

Reminds me of how much fun I had on the farm when the barn was being built a few years ago.

Apparently you’re never too old to play in the mud!

Although, this time I hope the story ends a little better for me than it did when I was a pup. Ammo the Dachshund

For the Love of the Hunt

Did you ever just love something so much that it didn’t matter how ridiculous or how embarrassing it made you look – you loved it just the same? Sometimes it just doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks – you just gotta be you!

Me, I’m overly enthusiastic when it comes to hunting my groundhogs on the farm – something that nobody seems to understand, not even my best friend Trooper.

At the end of the day though, hunting groundhogs is what I love to do – no matter how silly I look doing it! So go ahead, be you today!

Backyard Digging

Hey Friends! Follow me, I have something to show you….

ammo the dachshund digging

..It’s the hole that I dug in my backyard all by myself!

ammo the dachshund digging

Like really, no one helped me at all – not even my friend the groundhog.

ammo the dachshund digging

I was so proud of that hole, and then mom had to go and ruin it for me.

ammo the dachshund digging

Can you believe she filled in my hole?

ammo the dachshund digging

Well, little does she know, I started a new one on the other side of the yard. Shhhh! It’s our little secret.

Ponies, Kittens and Groundhog Holes

I spend a lot of my time on the family farm, and as I roam freely over the 20 acres I can always find plenty to do. I thought it would be a blast to share some of the fun stuff that I do on the farm with everyone, so I made my mom spend a day following me around.

On this particular morning I visited with my pony friends Minnow & Blitz for a short while. They made funny faces at me while I sniffed around for buried treasure in the tall grass. So far my efforts have yet to produce any riches or gold, but I won’t give up.

ammo the dachshund on the farm with the cats

Then I spent a good deal of time lounging around with my kitty pals, Spider and Cricket.

ammo the dachshund on the farm with the cats

Spider and Cricket are usually quite content to spend their entire days sunning.

Well, in Spider’s case, also wrestling bits of hay.

Me on the other hand, I get a little bored of sunning and lounging all day. So that’s why I struck up a game of Hide and Seek with Cricket, and ultimately found this awesome stick to play with.

And just when I was starting to think that I didn’t have anything else to show my mom (and my blog friends) about what everyday life is like for me on the farm…..

ammo the dachshund on the farm

….I remembered the holy grail of adventures, the thing that I covet the most, and don’t normally share with anyone…

ammo the dachshund on the farm

…for security purposes I can’t show you EXACTLY how I got there….

ammo the dachshund on the farm

…but regardless, WELCOME TO MY HOLE! My groundhog hole to be exact, and if I’m divulging all my secrets, then you must know that there isn’t just one hole on the farm, but ten to be exact, well eleven if you count the one across the culdesac in the neighbor’s yard.

ammo the dachshund on the farm

I know where all my little furry friends live, and I monitor their where-a-bouts on a day-to-day basis. It’s a tough job, but I just know one of these days my groundhog friends will invite me in for tea.

So, there you have it, a typical day on the farm for me. What about you? Where is your holy grail of adventures? Any of my Dachshund friends out there monitor groundhog holes too?

Summer on the Farm

Today I thought I’d share a few images from my evening on the farm – shot yesterday. Everyday is an adventure, and there is no shortage of things to do on the farm in the Summer. Arguably it’s not your average farm, especially when it’s run by a bunch of Super Heroes with an active imagination. You’re never to old to play dress-up, catch bugs, or in my case – build underground forts. I don’t plan on ever growing up. How about you?
