Cool Weather Hikes

Cool Weather Hikes

It’s the most beautiful time of year in Chester County, Pennsylvania – so much so that last weekend I got out for a hike in the beautiful countryside.

Cool Weather Hikes

My pal Shilah the Husky even came along for the fun. Fall is Shilah’s kind of weather. With her thick sled dog coat she thrives in the cool weather, and not wanting to be left out I wore my Ruffwear Fleece* so that I too could have a “sled dog coat”.

Cool Weather Hikes

Oh and don’t worry, in case you were wondering, my family came along too! I can’t seem to shake these fools. 😉

Cool Weather Hikes

I even got to practice some of my dog agility fun with some log jumps…

Cool Weather Hikes

….and tunnels! (sorta) 😉

Cool Weather Hikes

But the best part of hiking is always the view! Thankful to live in such a gorgeous place, because when the sun is shining you can’t have a bad day!

Labor Day Weekend Update

After spending nearly 2 months stuck at home helping mom and dad work on my new kitchen (which I promise I will share the finished project just as soon as the finishing touches are done), I was ready for some excitement. So mom and dad decided we needed a break over labor day weekend. Now most people would probably consider a break parking themselves on the couch all weekend, or soaking in some sun on the beach (which does sound nice), but instead, we do things a little wild around here.

I packed in as much excitement as I could over my 3-day weekend. From meeting the Budweiser Clydesdales in downtown West Chester (and their cool dalmatian sidekick Barley), antique shopping, dining out, stacking hay at the farm, hiking with my pal Shilah the Husky, and soaking in the last rays of summer – I did ALL THE THINGS!

Camping in the Poconos with Dogs

Last week I started to recap my annual camping trip with my friend, Shilah the Husky, well now I’m back to share more about all the fun we had (despite the rain). It’s too much fun to fit into one blog post, so don’t worry, there’s even more fun than this to come ahead!

Ammo the Dachshund Goes Camping in the Woods

One of my favorite parts about camping is getting breakfast in bed. It’s one of those few occasion where I don’t even have to get up to enjoy a big bowl of my “cereals”.

Ammo the Dachshund Goes Camping in the Woods

Shilah and I were excited to see that the weather had begun to clear up some, and although the rain was on and off, it wasn’t down pouring all day like it had been. Yipee!

Ammo the Dachshund Goes Camping in the Woods

Ammo the Dachshund Goes Camping in the Woods

So we broke out the fishing poles again, and had a little contest with our dad’s to see who could catch the most fish. (spoiler alert, none of us caught any!)

Ammo the Dachshund Goes Camping in the Woods

That’s ok though, because there was still plenty to do on our camping trip, like hiking! We didn’t get to go to any of the great hiking spots we had staked out for our trip, but we did get to take some walks around our campsite.

Ammo the Dachshund Goes Camping in the Woods

We even stopped to take a few selfies along the way, it’s not often I get to spend 4 whole days with my pal!

Ammo the Dachshund Goes Camping in the Woods

There may have even been an awkward kiss at one moment. It’s still out for debate on who kissed who.

Ammo the Dachshund Goes Camping in the Woods

Ammo the Dachshund Goes Camping in the Woods

Do you blame me though, I mean how can you not sneak a kiss when you’re hanging out with a pretty girl like Shilah!

Ammo the Dachshund Goes Camping in the Woods

Back at camp things were starting to heat up since it was finally dry enough to start the campfire.

Ammo the Dachshund Goes Camping in the Woods

Ammo the Dachshund Goes Camping in the Woods

As our day started to come to an end Shilah and I broke out our Glowdoggies * so we could have our own personal “flashlights” in the dark. Although Shilah questioned, “won’t the bears just be able to spot us way easier with these things on?” I told her not to worry, I packed bear spray!

Ammo the Dachshund Goes Camping in the Woods

As darkness really crept in the campfire started roaring!

Ammo the Dachshund Goes Camping in the Woods

That’s always my cue to hit the hay early, because campfires (or any fire for that matter) are not really my jam. That’s ok though, I much prefer snuggling up in the tent under my sleeping bag anyway.

Ammo the Dachshund Goes Camping in the Woods

I am a little sad I did miss out on the light writing fun everyone had with sparklers, but mom and dad made sure to include me in their own special way…

Ammo the Dachshund Goes Camping in the Woods

….it’s my name in lights! I’m famous!

Ammo the Dachshund Goes Camping in the Woods

Even celebrities like me can totally get down and dirty on a camping trip!

Stay tuned this week as I still have more fun to share about our adventures at a nearby lake!

P.S. Special thanks to Shilah’s mom from Mrs. Dailey’s Classroom for sharing some of her camping photos with me (the ones not watermarked with my website)!

Pet Friendly Road Trip Adventures: Gatlinburg, TN

Adventure Awaits with Ammo the DachshundIf you’ve been following along with my adventures lately then you know a couple weeks ago I went on an epic road trip. My week long travels have already taken me to some wonderful places; Washington, D.C., Shenandoah National Park, The Great Smoky Mountains, and now Gatlinburg, Tennessee!

Pet Friendly Cabin in Gatlinburg Tennessee with Ammo the Dachshund

My mom and dad had found a cute little cabin tucked into the mountains in Gatlinburg, Tennessee for me to spend two nights in during my road trip.

Gatlinburg is nestled at the entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and has great access to many of the hiking trails in the Smokies, but also has a bustling downtown area. The Downtown Parkway is essentially a boardwalk of sorts without the beach!

Pet Friendly Gatlinburg - walking downtown with Ammo the Dachshund

After a day of hiking in the Smokies I decided to check out the activity down town and headed out on an evening walk.

Pet Friendly Gatlinburg - walking downtown with Ammo the Dachshund

Many of the shops had open-air type attractions, and I started to gather just as much attention as the fast and furious cars and the cotton candy and the haunted attractions (if you catch my drift).

Pet Friendly Gatlinburg - walking downtown with Ammo the Dachshund

While I didn’t meander into any shops (and I’m not quite sure if there were any that were pet friendly or not), I had some fun checking out some of the more wild attractions – like this Ripley’s Believe It or Not.

Super Heroes in Gatlinburg with Ammo the Dachshund

Heck, I even got to meet some of the Avengers! I’m pretty sure they were wondering where my super hero costume was, but I assured them that it was safely packed in my travel bag should any funny business arrive.

Pet Friendly Dining in Gatlinburg with Ammo the Dachshund

After exploring the town for a bit I stumbled across a pet friendly patio for dinner at the Back Alley Grill.

Pet Friendly Dining in Gatlinburg with Ammo the Dachshund

At this point after a day full of hiking, and exploring the town, I was pretty beat. So while mom and dad ate I snuck in a quick nap.

Bears in the Smokies with Ammo the Dachshund

On the way back to my cabin I got to meet my SECOND BEAR of the trip! Only this one must have been pretty tried like me, because he was in a deep deep sleep and couldn’t even be bothered to say hello to me. (I left him my business card for when he wakes up)

After so much excitement for one day I spent as much time as I could relaxing at my cabin while mom and dad packed up for my next adventure. My next stop would be the BlogPaws Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, and I was going to need all the rest I could get!

Rest Stop with Ammo the Dachshund

And after a few more hours of driving, and a couple rest stops (where I left a few of my signature calling cards), I was almost in Nashville!

Make sure you stop by my blog tomorrow to hear all about the adventures I had the BlogPaws Conference, where I even got to meet Elvis!

P.S. Don’t forget, for you local Pennsylvanians, I’ll be at the Ryerss Family Fun Day this Saturday from 12 – 4pm with my friend Minnow the famous Painting Pony. Hope you’ll stop by and meet me! I’ll be performing some of my favorite tricks too!Ammo the Dachshund // Blog Signature // Celebrity

Pet Friendly Road Trip Adventures: Shenandoah National Park

Adventure Awaits with Ammo the DachshundIf you’ve been following along with me on Facebook then you know I went on a super fun road trip last week to some amazing pet friendly locations. Yesterday I shared my first stop along the way, the National Mall, and today I’m going to share my next pit stop, the Shenandoah National Park!

Shenandoah National Park with Ammo the Dachshund

The Shenandoah National Park is over 200,000 acres of protected lands that is home to deer, birds, black bears and more!

Within minutes of pulling into the park I had already seen a newborn deer cross the road in front of us with it’s mom, and if that weren’t exciting enough, you’ll never guess what I spotted next!

Black Bear in Shenandoah National Park with Ammo the Dachshund

Oh yes, that’s right, I spotted a Black Bear! And not just one black bear, but I saw two….one of which had bear cubs with it (unfortunately my camera crew missed that shot!).

And in case you were wondering what I did when I spotted the bear….I just took it all in. No barking, not one peep, because I may have been safely in my car, but there was no way I was going to give that bear any excuse to eat me! I’m no dummy!

Dinner on Skyline Drive with Ammo the Dachshund

After all that black bear excitement I took a breather to eat my dinner overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains on Skyline drive. Best dinner ever!

After I finished up dinner I checked into my pet friendly accommodations at the Skyland Resort for the night.

My room for the night was pretty basic, but the views were so breathtaking.

Skyland Resort Restaurant // Pet Friendly // Ammo the Dachshund

Within walking distance of my accommodations was a nice little restaurant that had a pet friendly patio for “to-go” orders. I was lucky enough to eat dinner and breakfast overlooking the blue ridge mountains.

Sunset over the Blueridge Mountains // Ammo the Dachshund

As a bonus there was a nice little bluff that was perfect for watching the sunset from.

Pet Friendly Road Trip // Ammo the Dachshund

After a restful nights sleep it was time to pack up and head out on my next adventure. But before I could hit the road, there was one last thing to do.

Millers Head Trail // Shenandoah National Park // Ammo the Dachshund

Hiking in Shenandoah! The Shenandoah National Park has several trails that pets are not allowed on, so I made sure to hit up one that was, Millers Head.

It had a few nice overlooks of the mountains, and was a relatively shady trail, which was nice on such a hot day.

Pet Friendly Road Trip // Ammo the Dachshund

As I headed out from Shenandoah I enjoyed taking in the scenery along Skyline Drive which runs 105 miles along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Shenandoah National Park. It’s the only public road through the park, and honestly makes a road trip that much better with it’s views!

And of course I had to stop to take a few selfies along the way!

The journey ahead to my next destination was long…

What do you think your dog would have done had it spotted a black bear like I did?

How you can help animal rescues by walking your dog

What if I told you that by simply taking your dog for a daily walk you could be helping rescue animals? You’d probably say I was crazy right? Well guess what my friend, the future is here!

Earn money for rescue dogs by walking your dog // Ammo the Dachshund

It’s super simple with an app for iPhone & Android called Walk for a Dog by WoofTrax. All you have to do is download the free app, choose the rescue group you want to walk for, and start the app every time you take your dog for a walk.

Walk for a Dog also keeps track of the distance, speed, and duration your walks are, but the best part is no matter how long or short your walk is – you can still earn money for your rescue group of choice!

Walk for a Dog’s donations to animal organizations are funded by sponsorship, advertising, and investors, and they send donations to active shelters and rescues about twice per year.

Ruffwear Roamer Leash Review & Giveaway

Ruffwear Roamer Leash Review & Giveaway

Recently my pal Shilah the Husky and I got to test out a product by Ruffwear, the Roamer Leash for some of our hiking/walking excursions. It’s quickly jumped to the top of our list for must-have walking gear, find out why below!

Ruffwear Roamer Leash Review & Giveaway

Ruffwear Roamer Leash Review & Giveaway

Ruffwear Roamer Leash Review & Giveaway

One of the things that makes the Roamer Leash so unique is that it can be used as a hand-held leash or it can be extended to go around your waist too.

Ruffwear Roamer Leash Review & Giveaway

Mom found that being able to tether me to her waist made hiking and walking so much easier! Not only did she have her hands free to take photos like this one, but it made it easier to climb tough terrain as I helped to pull her up the hill (with my powerful muscles!).

Ruffwear Roamer Leash Review & Giveaway

I was also impressed by the Talon Clasp which was extra durable and made mom feel easier that I wouldn’t be able to break it open from pulling too hard.

Ruffwear Roamer Leash Review & Giveaway

Another important feature about the Roamer leash is that it’s extendable! The wavelength stretch webbing can extend from 7.3 feet to 11 feet on the Large (which is what you see pictured) or 5.5 feet to 7 feet on the small.

Ruffwear Roamer Leash Review & Giveaway

It also comes with a handy accessory loop near the clasp for attaching dog bags or lightweight items and can also be used as a quick “short” leash when needed. Although the “short” leash works a little better for bigger dogs as I was a little too low to the ground for mom to grab the handle quickly or easily. But it’s not a necessary item, and mom found she didn’t need to use it much anyway.

Ruffwear Roamer Leash Review & Giveaway

So with our new Roamer leashes Shilah and I embarked on a few recent hikes. Our first stop was the Stroud Preserve!

Ruffwear Roamer Leash Review & Giveaway

Immediately our parents loved the fact that these leashes could extend with our pulling (and boy do Shilah and I like to pull) but weren’t as dangerous as zip leashes. With a zip leash you have to worry about rope burn (which has happened to my mom before) and you can’t grab the leash without hurting your hand in the event of an emergency. With the Roamer Leashes none of this was an issue as you can quickly grab the leash to pull your dog closer should you need to.

Ruffwear Roamer Leash Review & Giveaway

Ruffwear Roamer Leash Review & Giveaway

Shilah and I enjoyed our walk thoroughly with the Roamer Leash, and our parents had a nicer walk because when tethered to their waists our pulling was actually beneficial – helping to pull them up the hills (those lazy humans!)

Ruffwear Roamer Leash Review & Giveaway

Ruffwear Roamer Leash Review & Giveaway

The Roamer Leash also came in handy when it was time for Shilah and I to be tethered. The adjustable handle loop made it easy to tie us to any object on the trail when necessary.

Ruffwear Roamer Leash Review & Giveaway

As you saw last week, Shilah and I even tested our Roamer leashes on some tougher terrain when we visited Glen Onoko Falls.

Ruffwear Roamer Leash Review & Giveaway

Hiking Glen Onoko Falls with Ammo the Dachshund

Again, the ability to tether to our parent’s waists made the rocky terrain that much more manageable since the humans had their hands free to help themselves and us make the climb.

Shilah and I both agree the Roamer Leash has become our new favorite leash for all of our hiking and walking adventures! We highly recommend it!

And now for the best part….

Hiking Glen Onoko Falls with Dogs

As you saw yesterday, I went on a weekend camping adventure to the Pocono Mountains – in search of fun! Well aside from lounging around the campsite, my pal Shilah the Husky and I also went on a day-time adventure to hike the nearby Glen Onoko Falls.

Hiking Glen Onoko Falls with Ammo the Dachshund

Hiking Glen Onoko Falls with Ammo the Dachshund

After checking out some scenic overlooks we decided to hit up the popular trail to see some of the falls.

Hiking Glen Onoko Falls with Ammo the Dachshund

Hiking is one of my all-time favorite activities, in fact I get so excited that I charge up the trails like I was the lead sled dog instead of Shilah!

Hiking Glen Onoko Falls with Ammo the Dachshund

This particular hike was quite rocky, but Shilah and I were up for the challenge!

Our parents were glad to have our new Ruffwear Roamer Leashes with them, which made the hike so much more enjoyable. Stay tuned on Monday for a full review on them, and a chance to win one for your dog!

We crossed water and fallen trees, and mom found herself wishing we had one of Ruffwear’s Hiking Harnesses with the handle to lift me over obstacles like my hiking pals Chester & Gretel from You Did What With Your Weiner.

Hiking Glen Onoko Falls with Ammo the Dachshund

Shilah and I made it pretty far up the hike before stopping for a group photo….because that’s how we roll! We didn’t make it all the way to the big waterfall at the top because the climb started to get pretty steep and our parents were worried about the decent for us dogs (although I totally could of made it!).

Hiking Glen Onoko Falls with Ammo the Dachshund

On the way back down we ran into these two pups. I warned them that they may wish they had leashes attached to their humans as it got higher – because we all know those of us with 4 legs have to keep those with 2 legs from falling off the side of the mountain!

When we reached the bottom of our hike Shilah and I decided to take a dip in the river while our parents ate lunch.

I showed off my swimming skills to all the other pups hanging around the river, and I’m pretty sure they were all wishing they had a spiffy life vest just like me.

I was sad to end my weekend full of camping and hiking, but I have to say it was nice to finally get back home to my air conditioning!
