Lets Get Tricky: Teach Your Dog to Play Fetch

As many of you may know I’m a big fan of learning, and ever since I was a wee pup my mom has been taking me to classes and clicker training me just like my Trick Pony friends.

Since learning is a never ending adventure I’m always up to pick up a new skill, and lately mom has been helping me to perfect my fetching skills.

See I wasn’t born with those amazing retriever traits, and while I do enjoy chasing after a good toy, I’m not great about actually bring said toy back! (the video above is proof of that)

Let's Get Tricky! Teach Your Dog To Play Fetch

But that’s ok, armed with a few simple tools my mom helped me learn what it means to play a real game of fetch!

What You Need:

  • Yummy Treats (These came in my Barkbox* this month, but you can also snag them in the Barkshop* with code AMMO for a special surprise at checkout!)
  • A Fun Fetch Toy
  • Something to Target (I used a scrap of mat board from the frame shop, but anything flat and large will work)
  • Clicker (not pictured, but you can snag one off amazon*)

To teach this trick your dog needs a basic knowledge of clicker training. You can check out this website for a basic tutorial on clicker training, or grab yourself a beginner clicker training book*. And they should also have a basic knowledge of how to pick up an item with their mouth.

How to Teach Your Dog to Fetch:

  1. At a close distance ask your dog to touch the target with their feet. Click and reward each time their feet touch the target. If your dog doesn’t already have a cue to “target” you may have to let them accidentally walk across the target so you can click and reward them each time their feet touch your mark. Practice this close to your dog, then move the target to different spots and areas further from you to strengthen your dog’s knowledge of this task.
  2. If your dog already has a basic knowledge of how to chase an item and pick it up then you can move onto step 3 once they have mastered targeting. Otherwise you should teach your dog to pick up an item with their mouth first.
  3. At a close distance to your target toss a toy for your dog to get. Once they pick it up with their mouth ask them to touch their target again. When they hit the target WITH the toy in their mouth, click and reward. Repeat this at a close distance until your dog has mastered the idea. Continue to repeat this until you can toss the toy further and further away.

Congratulations! Your dog is now great at playing fetch the proper way (by returning the toy to you!) Much more fun isn’t it? Ammo the Dachshund // Blog Signature // Celebrity

Thanksgiving Roadtrip: Folly Beach Dogs

I’m a little late with giving everyone a recap of my Thanksgiving vacation, but with the busy holiday season at my mom’s shop I had a hard time getting my “tech team” to edit all the photos! But have no fear! I’m ready to share all the details of my week long trip down south to Folly Beach, South Carolina.

Thanksgiving Roadtrip: Folly Beach Dogs

Before I dive in to all the fun I had visiting with my family, I have to introduce you to my new friends! The cute little Jack Russell puppy is Artemis and the fluffy white fellow, Sharkie (or Mark Sharkman for those that know him a little better). Artemis and Sharkie are Folly Beach residents and they had a blast showing Trooper and I how to be real beach dogs.

Thanksgiving Roadtrip: Folly Beach Dogs

Thanksgiving Roadtrip: Folly Beach Dogs

Artemis has just started his Beach Dog training (after all he is pretty young still), but not to worry, I took him under my wing and shared all the important things about the world with him. Like how to hunt rabbits, dig holes, and bark at strangers.

Thanksgiving Roadtrip: Folly Beach Dogs

Sharkie on the other hand is a beach dog pro!

Thanksgiving Roadtrip: Folly Beach Dogs

Sharkie’s ball chasing skills made Trooper and I look like a couple of idiots.

Thanksgiving Roadtrip: Folly Beach Dogs

Yeah, I’m pretty sure we should be embarrassed to be seen in public after watching Sharkie chase after his ball. We didn’t come off anywhere near as elegant as he does in photos.

Thanksgiving Roadtrip: Folly Beach Dogs

Gotta love a dog that knows what he wants!

Thanksgiving Roadtrip: Folly Beach Dogs

Sharkie and I had a blast on the beach though and it was fun having another small dog sidekick to run around with. I’m pretty sure Trooper felt very out numbered with all us shorties.

I already miss being able to run like the wind on the wide open beach. It’s something I’ll never get tired of.

And since you all couldn’t be there with me to enjoy the glorious beach, I made this fun video so you could pretend like you were there with me!

So what do you think? Aren’t you impressed with Sharkie’s ball skills? (Don’t tell him, but I’ve been practicing at home so that next time we get together I’ll look a little cooler!Ammo the Dachshund // Blog Signature // Celebrity

Throwback Thursday: Puppy Entertainment

On the Lake with Friends

Adventures on the lake are quickly becoming my favorite thing to do in the summer. And at the Marsh Creek Boat Rental, where dogs are always welcome, there is a whole slew of fun to be had out on the water!

On the Lake with Friends // Ammo the Dachshund

I started out my adventure by renting a paddleboard with mom. There’s nothing quite like gliding through the water on one of those!

On the Lake with Friends // Ammo the Dachshund

This time I brought along my pal Shilah, for her very first boat ride in a motorized rowboat rental.

On the Lake with Friends // Ammo the Dachshund

Dad also rented a kayak which I happily took a few laps around the lake in.

On the Lake with Friends // Ammo the Dachshund

Since this was Shilah’s first trip to the lake I decided to let her test out the paddle board, which is one of my favorite rental choices.

On the Lake with Friends // Ammo the Dachshund

Shilah had also never been swimming before, so I gave her a little coaching from the sidelines.

On the Lake with Friends // Ammo the Dachshund

Eventually though I hopped aboard to show her how to man her lake vessel with style. She’s only one, so she has lots of learning to do still!

On the Lake with Friends // Ammo the Dachshund

Shilah almost got to assist in her first water rescue when Dad accidentally tipped his kayak, but luckily things didn’t get too crazy.

On the Lake with Friends // Ammo the Dachshund

Later I showed off my natural swimming skills, and it was enough to convince my pal to take her first dip too! You can see her showing off at the end of this video:

On the Lake with Friends // Ammo the Dachshund

Being on the lake with my friends was so enjoyable I just didn’t want it to end!

On the Lake with Friends // Ammo the Dachshund

So when we landed back on shore I decided to practice some of my swimming skills.

On the Lake with Friends // Ammo the Dachshund

I’ve gotten quite good at playing fetch in the water, mom even picked up this new floating buoy toy for me from West Elm (which mom bought before it sold out).

Sigh, I’m so sad that summer is coming to an end, but hopefully I’ll get to squeeze in a few more lake trips before it ends!Ammo the Dachshund

Friday Fetch: iFetch Ball Launcher for Dogs

I’m no labrador retriever, but I do enjoy the occasional game of fetch. So when I came across this fun new kickstarter project for the iFetch I figured I had to share it with all of you.

Designed by a Grandfather and Grandson team, the iFetch is an interactive ball launcher that automatically launches a small tennis ball between 10 and 30 feet. Some dogs can even be taught to play fetch by themselves. How cool!
