The Goshen Country Fair is for Dogs

The Goshen Country Fair is exactly what you think of when you picture a country fair. Livestock, carnival rides and games, music, blueberry pie, cotton candy, and dogs!

Goshen Country Fair // Dog Friendly Event // Ammo the Dachshund

This past weekend I got to attend the fair for some good old fashioned hometown fun!

Goshen Country Fair // Dog Friendly Event // Ammo the Dachshund

To kick off my adventure I checked out the Pet Show hosted by the SPCA which was open to family dogs who wanted to compete in categories like cutest puppy and best costume. This year I decided not to enter, but instead observe my competition for next year!

Plus it gave me a better spot to check out all the cute ladies!

Goshen Country Fair // Dog Friendly Event // Ammo the Dachshund

After the pet show I wandered over to the 4-H livestock tents to make some new friends. The sheep were a little sheepish though, and it seemed no one was interested in being my BFF.

Goshen Country Fair // Dog Friendly Event // Ammo the Dachshund

The cows proved to be a little more interesting – or at least their smell was quite intriguing to me! I’m trying to convince mom that I need my own cows on the farm now.

I then took some time to check out all the fun booths and fair items, and when mom started to zero in on a booth that was offering free nail trims – I decided it would be better if we checked out the carnival games instead!

Goshen Country Fair // Dog Friendly Event // Ammo the Dachshund

I tried my paw at some of the squirt gun games – but alas my aim wasn’t quite up to par to beat the small child sitting next to me!

Goshen Country Fair // Dog Friendly Event // Ammo the Dachshund

Dad even tried to win me a stuffed animal at the dart game – but it seems our luck had run out on the carnival games.

Goshen Country Fair // Dog Friendly Event // Ammo the Dachshund

So instead we picked up some Goshen Homemade Doughnuts and decided to wait for the evening’s entertainment to begin.

Goshen Country Fair // Dog Friendly Event // Ammo the Dachshund

They had live music and even a pie eating contest to entertain me while I waited for the big act of the night to take the stage.

Goshen Country Fair // Dog Friendly Event // Ammo the Dachshund

The Kountry K-9 Show was just up my alley, as a group of rescue trick dogs performed some pretty cool tricks on stage. I was secretly hoping they might ask me to join them!

Goshen Country Fair // Dog Friendly Event // Ammo the Dachshund

At the end of the night I waved goodbye to the ferris wheel, and felt grateful that dogs weren’t allowed on the carnival rides because I’m perfectly happy keeping all 4 feet on the ground!

Instinct Rawboost Treats Product Review and Giveaway from Chewy.com

Disclaimer: This review and giveaway is brought to you by Chewy.

My pals over at Chewy.com recently offered me the chance to test out some of Nature’s Variety Instinct Rawboost Minis Treats in the chicken flavor. I’ve secretly always wondered what eating raw was like – as it seems to have become a trend within the dog community – and trying out these raw treats seemed like a great way to jump into it.

Instinct Rawboost Treats // Product Review and Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

Mom’s a bit too “chicken” to let me eat all my meals raw, but with these Rawboost treats I can have a taste of raw meat without needing to eat my main meals raw. These Rawboost treats offer up real, all natural chicken and pure raw ingredients – in a freeze dried treat form.

Instinct Rawboost Treats // Product Review and Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

These tiny treats boast only 2 calories per treat, perfect for us dogs that like to watch our figure, and they are a great size to use as training treats too.

Instinct Rawboost Treats // Product Review and Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

Of course when I smelled that burst of raw chicken flavor I dropped everything and came sprinting over. Cricket better watch out, because when I smell chicken nothing is going to get in my way!

Instinct Rawboost Treats // Product Review and Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

Nothing is ever truly free at my house, so mom made me work for my treats, but as you can see from the video below – I’d pretty much to anything for a taste of these scrumptious chicken bites!

My Ponies Head to Chincoteague

Every year my mom packs up the ponies and heads to Chincoteague Island in Virginia for the Annual Chincoteague Pony Swim and Auction the last week in July. Sadly I’m always left behind for this annual homecoming of sorts, mostly because mom says it’s too hot for me!

So while I stay home with dad and watch movies, eat junk food, and stay up way too late, mom and my ponies are performing all week long at the Chincoteague Pony Centre in the hot summer weather. Perhaps I got the better end of this deal?

This is Minnow, one of the most talented artists you’ll ever meet, and he’s my bestest pony friend.

Painting is one of Minnow’s favorite things to do, can’t you tell by that big smile on his face?

When Minnow gets ready to paint I’m never far from his side, because every great artist needs an assistant.

Trooper likes to help too sometimes, but he doesn’t always have the focus to be a great painting assistant.

I on the other hand might as well have paint flowing through my veins, and the messier the job the better!

Day at the Pool

Day at the Pool // Ammo the Dachshund

One of the great things about the summer is getting to spend the day at my mom mom & pop pop’s pool.

Day at the Pool // Ammo the Dachshund

I wouldn’t say that I love to swim or anything, but floating around on a raft in the water is a pretty good time.

I’ve become sort of an expert at patrolling the waters, making sure no one drowns and that everyone plays by the rules. I run a tight ship at my pool!

Kong Premium Treats Product Review & Giveaway

Kong Premium Treats Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

I recently got the chance to take the new line of KONG Premium Treats for a spin; I’m sure nearly every dog has a kong just laying around their house begging to be stuffed with yummies – I know I do!

I was excited to try this new line of treats because they boast:

  • No wheat, corn or soy
  • No artificial colors or flavors
  • No animal byproducts
  • Made in USA

I don’t know about you, but it’s so much easier to get my mom to buy me treats when they are made from stuff that’s good for me!

Kong Premium Treats Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

First up I decided to test the Chicken Mini Meat Bites, these little nuggets looked just the right size for me.

Kong Premium Treats Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

With the first ingredient being chicken, I can attest that these soft chewy treats were oh so yummy. They’re the perfect size to use as training treats and can even can be used to stuff certain kong toys.

Kong Premium Treats Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

Next up were the Beef & Cheese Meaty Flavor Bites, which looked to be the perfect fit for a kong that I already owned.

Kong Premium Treats Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

These were just as delicious, but took me extra long to devour because they were inside my Kong – something mom claims is an extra plus, but I think it’s just a waste of time!

Kong Premium Treats Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

For my last taste test I saved my favorite, the Chew Buddies Variety Pack, mostly because what’s not to love about these adorable cookies! They were almost too cute to eat…….but my stomach won out in that battle.

Kong Premium Treats Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

I decided to dive into the T-Rex shaped one first, mostly because I felt a kindred spirit to him since I too have short stubby arms!

Kong Premium Treats Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

Mr. T-Rex didn’t last very long, but mom said he helped me fight plaque and tarter buildup with his crunchy body. I’m not really sure what all that means, but if it gets me more cookies then count me in.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed my Kong Premium Treats taste test – but the best part is that you too can win your very own taste test!!

Kong Premium Treats Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

Friday Fetch: TreatToob

I stumbled across the TreatToob from Paww and within minutes I was drooling. This new product allows you to bring high-value treats (think peanut butter, liverwurst, even pureed food) on the go. The TreatToob is made of soft yet rugged food-grade silicone, and it dispenses virtually any squeeze-able treat.

Simply unscrew the cap and fill it with your dog’s favorite mushy treat, then flip open the hinged cap and squeeze. This is great for training as it allows you to reward your dog with something that they really love. Also it means that I can have peanut butter wherever I go!

Stepping it up on the Agility Course

Now that I’m back to my regular weekly agility classes (after mom had knee surgery and I had to take a little break) I’ve jumped right back in where I left off and I’m now doing full courses! I’m still a bit of a novice and have plenty to learn, but I’m having loads of fun running the courses!

So what do you think? Does it look like I’m having a blast?!

In Preparation – Pony Penning 2013

Ammo the Dachshund Helps Prepare for Pony Penning

Every year around June mom and I start training the ponies for a very special trip. A trip to Chincoteague Island in Virginia at the end of July to watch their wild relatives swim from Assateague to Chincoteague during the annual Chincoteague Pony Swim and Auction.

As official pony trainer it’s my duty to help the ponies prepare by learning new tricks so they are ready to perform for their week long stay down there at the Chincoteague Pony Centre.

Ammo the Dachshund Helps Prepare for Pony Penning // Chincoteague Pony Boomerang

This year my pal Boomerang will be making his first trip to Virginia to perform, so I had a little chat with him about how he’s supposed to behave properly and not embarrass me.

Ammo the Dachshund Helps Prepare for Pony Penning // Chincoteague Pony Boomerang

Boomerang sulked for the rest of the day, what a baby!

Ammo the Dachshund Helps Prepare for Pony Penning // Chincoteague Pony Boomerang

Another part of Boomer’s preparation is reading the famous book by Marguerite Henry, Misty of Chincoteague. Things were going well until Boomer confessed that he doesn’t know how to read!

Sigh, it’s going to be a very very long summer! Ammo the Dachshund

I went on a Barn Hunt

Barn Hunt with Ammo the Dachshund

On Mother’s Day I got to go on a very special adventure with my mom (dad came too). We packed up the car and headed south to New Jersey for a Barn Hunt Practice!

Barn Hunts were created to honor the traditional role of “ratcatchers” in ridding barns and properties of vermin. Barn Hunts are open to any dog, of (almost) any size, type or breed. In a Barn Hunt competition you can earn titles and placements at various levels and degrees of difficulty.

Barn Hunt with Ammo the Dachshund

At this Barn Hunt I met up with my Philadelphian gal pal Liebe, and we were both pretty excited to hunt for some rats! (Especially Liebe who is a city dog – and doesn’t get as many chances as me to hunt for vermin)

Barn Hunt with Ammo the Dachshund

At a Barn Hunt you are required to go through straw bale tunnels and climb over several bales to earn a qualifying mark – all while in pursuit of a rat.

Barn Hunt with Ammo the Dachshund

In the lower levels you are then met with various tubes, some of which contain rat bedding and one that contains an actual rat. Your goal as rat hunter extraordinare is to locate the rat and alert your mom or dad that you have found the correct tube containing it. Once found your mom/dad is responsible for telling the judge you have found the rat – in which case the time will stop (as long as you have completed the necessary requirements of completing tunnels and climbing straw bales too).

Barn Hunt with Ammo the Dachshund

As the day progressed I got better and better at finding my rats. I even began digging at the tubes and making lots of noise once I found the tubes that contained a rat.

Barn Hunt with Ammo the Dachshund

Mom said in the higher level classes I would even have to find multiple rats in one run – making sure to find them fast enough to not run over the time limit, many of which that are hidden under straw and in crevices. Sounds like a blast!

Barn Hunt with Ammo the Dachshund

Liebe (who is just over a year old) even had fun locating the rats and as she gets older I’m sure she’s going to be one ferocious rat hunter just like me!

Barn Hunt with Ammo the Dachshund

I had so much fun looking for my rats, that sitting on the sidelines while the other dogs had a turn was so hard!

Barn Hunt with Ammo the Dachshund

I can’t wait to return again and actually compete in this fun new sport – it’s totally my kind of competition!

You can learn more about the rules of Barn Hunt and find competitions and practices local to you HERE. Ammo the Dachshund
