The Dogs Before Me

In the 6 years that I have known my mom and dad it’s hard for me to imagine that before I came along there were other dogs. Like lots of other dogs! Crazy right?

Well ok, technically I’m the very first dog for my dad, but my mom….she’s had many adventures with the dogs before me. So today since it’s #throwbackthursday I thought it would be fun to share some of those dogs that came before me. Because you know what, I’m not so different from them.

My mom started her love of dogs at a very young age. Here she is with one of the firsts, a rescue dog named Deacon.

If you fast forward to 1991 – my mom’s family rescued Sneakers. She was a golden mix, and if you look closely you can see her two front paws were white, as if she was wearing sneakers. She went on to be a 4-H dog and even earned her Canine Good Citizen certification.

But see, my mom loved dogs so much that she wanted a dog to call her very own. So after years of pleading she became the owner of her very first dog, a rescued black labrador retriever named Big Jack Attack. (Jack for short).

Throwback Thursday: The Dogs Before Me // Jack // Ammo the Dachshund

My mom tells me stories of how Jack was a big lovable bear. He literally would attack you for kisses when you came in the door (sounds a little bit like me too). The more stories I hear about my mom’s life with Jack, the more I can’t help but think we were pretty darn similar.

While Jack passed away in 2006, I know that his memory continues to live on in many of the things that I still do today. I only wish I could have met him, because something tells me we would have been great friends.

There are many many more stories I could share about the dogs before me, but we’ll have to save that for another time. Now it’s your turn to tell me, what sort of fun memories did you have of your beloved furry friends? Ammo the Dachshund

I only have one regret with this new t-shirt though…

….it doesn’t come in a doggie size! boo hoo! But perhaps they’ll add to their growing selection of designs – a dog sized one too!

So if you’re looking to update your wardrobe soon, I highly recommend you check out Fuji and Friends! You can even save 20% off your next order with code event20.

Step 1: Using the frog tape, tape off the portion of your bowl that you do not want to have chalkboard paint on it. You may need some help from someone who doesn’t have paws!

Once your bowl is completely dry it will be ready to write on with chalk! You may want to prep the surface first by applying a coat of chalk evenly across the entire bowl and erasing it before writing on it.

My Trip to the SPCA

In keeping with my goals for the 13 Project I have been collecting unwanted towels and blankets for the past few months. So this past weekend I decided I finally had a big box filled enough to make a trip to my local SPCA.

Ammo the Dachshund // Lending a Helping Paw // My trip to the SPCA

I was excited to lend a helping paw and put my old towels to good use by giving them to animals that could use them more than me. I knew they would love them because I personally tested each and every one for optimal softness.

So we loaded up the car and headed to the Chester County SPCA. I had to wait in the car while Mom and Dad took my donation inside, but when they returned they shared with me some of the pets that were looking forever homes at the SPCA.

Duke is a super lovable family dog who is 4 years old. He loves all people and kids and is already housebroken. If you want someone to play fetch with, then this is the boy for you!

This sweet girl Ginger, a terrier mix, was Mom and Dad’s favorite. She had the cutest little face and silly little ears that stood straight up. She is about 1-3 years old and was found as a stray.

Mom said she wished we could have brought all of the puppies looking for families home with us, but since that’s just not possible for us we hope that by donating towels and blankets we can do our part to help in some way. Even if it’s just a small thing.

So who else is with me in helping the shelters? There is always something you can do to help; adopt a dog, donate old blankets & towels, share adoptable pets with your friends and family – I know you can do it! We can all be heroes for the animals just looking for a little love. Ammo the Dachshund

Dog Shaming – My Embarrassing Secrets

Have you heard of the new (gone viral) website called Dog Shamming? Essentially it’s a quirky little website dedicated to embarrassing and humiliating canines by putting our “shame” on blast for the World to see. Cruel right?

I must admit though, I did have a good chuckle at the expense of a few of these doxies….

I was having such a good time laughing my head off at these poor saps, that is until Mom reminded me that I have a few things I should be shameful of too. Who me? Yea right?

Friday Fetch: The Clicker Leash

I don’t talk a lot about the training methods my mom uses with me on the blog (but I should!), but since I was just a wee pup my mom has been using clicker training with me. Clicker training is a positive training method for animals using a clicker or small mechanical noisemaker, as a marker for behavior.

In fact, since my mom knew that us Dachshunds are one of the hardest dogs to house train (it’s true), she began clicker training me from the start to do my business outside. I’m proud to say I am completely house trained now (even if it did take me a little longer than the average pooch) thanks to the clicker. Now had we known about the Clicker Leash from the start, this totally would have been a must have item for me when I was learning the potty basics.

Ammo the Dachshund // Friday Fetch // Clicker Leash

The Clicker Leash puts effective, humane training methods at your fingertips by merging a clicker with an ergonomic, lightweight leash handle. The Clicker Leash makes reward-based training convenient and fun while eliminating juggling and fumbling. Whether you are training your puppy, working on basic life skills with an adult dog or competing in canine sports the Clicker Leash puts your clicker where you need it, when it counts. As long as you have your dog’s leash, your favourite training tool is on hand!

Friday Fetch: Beer for Dogs

Ok, now I know what you’re thinking – beer for dogs….not such a great idea. And I completely agree, while I don’t condone canine drinking of any kind, this is Bowser Beer for Dogs!

Bowser Beer for Dogs // Ammo the Dachshund

Technically it’s not really beer and is instead made with:

  • USDA beef or chicken.
  • Malt barley (full of B-vitamins) –just like in your beer.
  • Glucosamine for joint health.

Bowser Beer for Dogs // Ammo the Dachshund

And you don’t have to worry because Bowser Beer DOES NOT CONTAIN:

  • Alcohol or carbonation.
  • Hops, which can be toxic to dogs.
  • Commercial broth, which contains loads of salt, fat, MSG, onions and meat of unknown origin.

Bowser Beer for Dogs // Ammo the Dachshund

So basically it’s just a dog friendly drink packaged to look like a case of beer. Which looks like it would totally be a blast in a glass (name that tv show)! Bowser Beer also sells Liver Pretzels – the perfect combination with a case of dog friendly beer. You can also order custom labels with your dogs photo on the front great for their 21st (or would that be 7th) birthday!

Decisions. Decisions.

The other day I got to take a much needed trip to Petco.

And by much needed, I mean I NEEDED new toys.

Ammo the Dachshund takes a trip to Petco

After agonizing over the perfect toy to choose I picked out these two and was excited to give them a whirl when I got home.

I was having a grand time playing with my new toys in my yard when my neighbor Harley the Rottweiler peeked her head over the fence.

Imagination Hat – Dinosaur Land

As you may already know, I’m on an imagination adventure while my pal Minnow the Painting Pony is performing at Pony Penning all week with my mom. On tuesday I went to outer space, yesterday I went under the sea and today I’m on a journey to Dinosaur Land!

Imagination Hat - Ammo the Dachshund - Dinosaur Land

I brought my binoculars with me, because I’m really hoping to see some Dinosaurs up close and personal!

Imagination Hat - Ammo the Dachshund - Dinosaur Land

Wouldn’t it be awesome if I saw a T-Rex? Did you know my mom and dad almost named me T-Rex (which is awesome by the way) on account of my stubby little arms.

I’m just as scary as a T-Rex too…just check out my ferocious growl! So don’t worry, should I happen upon any Dinosaurs I can totally hold my own! Ammo the Dachshund
