Adventures in Home Improvement

Adventures in Home Improvement // Ammo the Dachshund

Over the weekend I took a trip with my family to my favorite dog friendly home improvement store.

Adventures in Home Improvement // Ammo the Dachshund

As with many trips to the home improvement store, I wouldn’t exactly call it thrilling.

Adventures in Home Improvement // Ammo the Dachshund

Shopping for all the things necessary for a future kitchen remodel at my house is enough to bore a dog to sleep (as if my big yawn wasn’t clue enough).

Adventures in Home Improvement // Ammo the Dachshund

Eventually I convinced mom and dad that if they let me out of the cart our trip would be much easier – since I’m great at sniffing out deals!

Adventures in Home Improvement // Ammo the Dachshund

Little did I know that once out of the cart mom would make me practice my sit/stays and healing. I guess a working dog’s work is never done!

Adventures in Home Improvement // Ammo the Dachshund

Eventually we made our way over to the kitchen appliances and I was ecstatic to see that the new trend in fridges were easy to reach and easy to open – perfect for little dogs with short little legs!

Adventures in Home Improvement // Ammo the Dachshund

Despite my desperate pleas that we must upgrade our fridge to one of these, mom and dad said I have to save a lot more pennies before we can afford to buy one of them. Darn! Just when I had figured out where I plan to store all my hot dogs. At least a dog can dream.

Adventures in Home Improvement // Ammo the Dachshund

What we did come home with was a new dishwasher (on account of mine has been leaking all over the floor….and mom and dad got tired of chasing me around the house after the towels that were supposed to be keeping the floor dry….hehe).

Although honestly I don’t see the point, considering I’m the absolute best dishwasher they are ever going to find!Ammo the Dachshund

Does your dog think he’s an expert dishwasher too?

Swimming Dogs and Ponies at the Lake

Swimming Dogs and Ponies at the Lake // Ammo the Dachshund

It’s no secret that I love spending time at the lake during the summer.

Swimming Dogs and Ponies at the Lake // Ammo the Dachshund

But did you know that my pony friends from the farm also enjoy relaxing at the lake on hot summer days?

Swimming Dogs and Ponies at the Lake // Ammo the Dachshund

While I’ve been to the lake with my ponies many times before, this time I decided to find out what it was like to swim with them! My favorite pony Minnow offered up his back to take me for a swim around the lake.

And since ponies don’t come equipped with seat belts, mom had to come along too to make sure I didn’t accidentally fall in (not to worry though, I wore my life vest at all times too).

Swimming Dogs and Ponies at the Lake // Ammo the Dachshund

Swimming Dogs and Ponies at the Lake // Ammo the Dachshund

My pal Minnow is actually a Chincoteague Pony and he was born wild on the Island of Assateague. Which if you know the story of the Chincoteague Ponies, then you may know that as a young pony Minnow made the swim across the Chincoteague Channel during Pony Penning Week when he was just a young foal. So if anyone knows how to swim, it’s my pal Minnow.

And I have to say, swimming on the back of a pony is a heck of a lot easier than swimming in the lake on your own. I think it’s going to have to be my preferred method of transportation on the lake from now on!

So thanks Minnow, for taking me on my maiden pony swimming voyage! I hope to have many more in my future! Ammo the Dachshund

P.S. Thanks to my pals from My Life, Naturally for taking some of the photos in this post!

New York or Bust

New York of Bust // Ammo the Dachshund

Over the 4th of July weekend I packed up my ponies and headed north 5 hours to New York!

New York of Bust // Ammo the Dachshund

New York of Bust // Ammo the Dachshund

After so many pit-stops I was fully expecting to end up in the big apple, but instead I ended up in the middle of nowhere at a horse campground!

New York of Bust // Ammo the Dachshund

I unpacked my ponies and tucked them in for the night….

New York of Bust // Ammo the Dachshund

…and pitched my tent for yet another fun weekend of camping!

New York of Bust // Ammo the Dachshund

I may or may not have hogged all the sleeping bags in the night. At least I was comfy!

New York of Bust // Ammo the Dachshund

When I awoke the next morning it became apparent that my ponies had made the long journey to New York to compete on a dog agility course! (at least that’s what it looked like to me)

New York of Bust // Ammo the Dachshund

It had a teeter totter….

New York of Bust // Ammo the Dachshund

…and some sort of porcupine looking things…

New York of Bust // Ammo the Dachshund

…and chickens? Ok well maybe it was the advanced dog agility course, which would explain why I’ve never seen any of these obstacles at my training classes.

Regardless my ponies were super brave and attempted each and every one of these challenging obstacles over the weekend!

New York of Bust // Ammo the Dachshund

I had a relaxing weekend watching them perform from the comfort of my favorite seat in the car. I even had my portable fan going to keep me cool.

New York of Bust // Ammo the Dachshund

I even got to pack in some tanning during my weekend in New York. And before I knew it we were on the road again headed back home to Pennsylvania.

And the good news is, we only got one flat tire on the way home! (not to worry, I’m an expert at changing tires).

What sort of adventures did your dog have over the 4th of July weekend? Ammo the Dachshund

Hiking Glen Onoko Falls with Dogs

As you saw yesterday, I went on a weekend camping adventure to the Pocono Mountains – in search of fun! Well aside from lounging around the campsite, my pal Shilah the Husky and I also went on a day-time adventure to hike the nearby Glen Onoko Falls.

Hiking Glen Onoko Falls with Ammo the Dachshund

After checking out some scenic overlooks we decided to hit up the popular trail to see some of the falls.

Hiking Glen Onoko Falls with Ammo the Dachshund

Hiking is one of my all-time favorite activities, in fact I get so excited that I charge up the trails like I was the lead sled dog instead of Shilah!

Hiking Glen Onoko Falls with Ammo the Dachshund

This particular hike was quite rocky, but Shilah and I were up for the challenge!

Our parents were glad to have our new Ruffwear Roamer Leashes with them, which made the hike so much more enjoyable. Stay tuned on Monday for a full review on them, and a chance to win one for your dog!

We crossed water and fallen trees, and mom found herself wishing we had one of Ruffwear’s Hiking Harnesses with the handle to lift me over obstacles like my hiking pals Chester & Gretel from You Did What With Your Weiner.

Hiking Glen Onoko Falls with Ammo the Dachshund

Shilah and I made it pretty far up the hike before stopping for a group photo….because that’s how we roll! We didn’t make it all the way to the big waterfall at the top because the climb started to get pretty steep and our parents were worried about the decent for us dogs (although I totally could of made it!).

On the way back down we ran into these two pups. I warned them that they may wish they had leashes attached to their humans as it got higher – because we all know those of us with 4 legs have to keep those with 2 legs from falling off the side of the mountain!

When we reached the bottom of our hike Shilah and I decided to take a dip in the river while our parents ate lunch.

I showed off my swimming skills to all the other pups hanging around the river, and I’m pretty sure they were all wishing they had a spiffy life vest just like me.

After cooling off Shilah and I decided to head into Jim Thorpe to grab some ice cream!

Italian Ice was just what I needed after an invigorating hike!

I was sad to end my weekend full of camping and hiking, but I have to say it was nice to finally get back home to my air conditioning!

Rumor has it I won’t have to wait too long for my next camping adventure, as I’m headed off on another adventure soon….this time with my ponies! Ammo the Dachshund

Camping in the Pocono Mountains

Camping in the Pocono Mountains with Ammo the Dachshund

Over the weekend I packed my bags and headed for the mountains, the Pocono Mountains to be exact, for a weekend of camping and fun with my pal Shilah the Husky.

Shilah and I both made our way to the mountains ready for some adventures, and a bit of relaxing too.

Camping in the Pocono Mountains with Ammo the Dachshund

Our rustic retreat included a super fun footbridge (the only way across the river) that Shilah and I thought was a blast!

Camping in the Pocono Mountains with Ammo the Dachshund

Our parents perhaps could of wished they could park the car a little closer to our campsite. But like I say, a little exercise never hurt anyone!

Camping in the Pocono Mountains with Ammo the Dachshund

Our digs for the weekend included a fun little cabin (although I opted to set-up and sleep in my tent) in the woods.

Camping in the Pocono Mountains with Ammo the Dachshund

I of course wasted no time checking out all necessary “holes” to make sure no critters were intruding on our campsite.

Camping in the Pocono Mountains with Ammo the Dachshund

The accommodations were quite rustic, including this outdoor shower, but when you’re a dog – none of that really matters does it!

Camping in the Pocono Mountains with Ammo the Dachshund

A few steps from camp was a stream, complete with my very own waterfall!

Dad had fun casting out the fishing rod – which was a first for me. I’ve also since discovered that I get about as worked up about fishing as my adventurous pal, Crusoe the Dachshund. Although my main goal is trying to save that little bobber (or tiny floating ball as I saw it) from “drowning”. Mom says I need to work on the idea that fishing is supposed to be a relaxing sport, not a “bark as loud as you can and frantically try to save things out of the water” sport.

Aside from fishing, Shilah and I had fun relaxing around the campsite – taking in as much outdoor time as we could!

Camping in the Pocono Mountains with Ammo the Dachshund

After a full day of fun, Shilah and I were ready for some campfire food! Unfortunately all we got was kibble…..but the smells were enough to make a dog drool.

Camping in the Pocono Mountains with Ammo the Dachshund

As the night rolled on Shilah and I grew tired of patrolling the campsite in our Glowdoggies, and it seemed it was time to call it a night.

Camping in the Pocono Mountains with Ammo the Dachshund

I snuggled into my sleeping bag dreaming of all the critters I would hunt for the next day…

And I awoke rested and ready for my next big adventure! Ammo the Dachshund

Stay tuned tomorrow as I share my adventures hiking Glen Onoko Falls!

What to Pack when Camping with your Dog in the Mountains

Last year I shared a collection of what I packed for a summer camping trip to the beach with my pal Shilah the Husky.  Well this year I’m back to share my new packing list for a camping trip to the mountains that I’m taking with Shilah this upcoming weekend!

Dog Friendly Camping in Cape May // Ammo the Dachshund

While I tend to pack a lot of the same things each time I head on a camping trip – there are a few things extra that I throw in when headed to the mountains (where I plan to do some hiking and water-related activities).

So here’s a list of a few of the things I plan to pack this weekend:

Ammo’s must-have Mountain Camping Gear:

I’m very much looking forward to doing a bit of this soon….

So what do you think? Anything I’m forgetting to pack?Ammo the Dachshund

Dog Day at the Ballpark

Ammo the Dachshund's First Baseball Game

You guys, do you believe that I’m 5 years old and I have yet to ever go to a baseball game! Well all that changed last weekend…..because this dog went to the ballpark!

Ammo the Dachshund's First Baseball Game

Last Saturday the Wilmington Blue Rocks Stadium opened their stands to dogs of all shapes and sizes for the Dog Days of Summer – and I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to check out my very first baseball game.

Ammo the Dachshund's First Baseball Game

It was a beautiful night at the ballpark, and I had heard rumors that they have peanuts and cracker jacks! I’m sure you can imagine my excitement.

Ammo the Dachshund's First Baseball Game

Mom and Dad bought me some pretty sweet seats to watch the game from – and of course I made sure to wear my fancy bow tie for the occasion.

Ammo the Dachshund's First Baseball Game

Before I knew it, the first batter was up!

Ammo the Dachshund's First Baseball Game

I was pretty enthralled with the game – at least after I got a chance to sniff all my neighbors properly.

Ammo the Dachshund's First Baseball Game

Since it was Dog Day at the park, many of my neighbors in the stands were of the 4 legged variety. Like these cute Basenji pups.

Ammo the Dachshund's First Baseball Game

I was quite intrigued when mom told me that they don’t really bark, instead they yodel! Unfortunately I didn’t hear any yodeling this day, so I’ll believe it when I hear it!

Ammo the Dachshund's First Baseball Game

I also spotted a few other dachshunds at the park.

Ammo the Dachshund's First Baseball Game

These girls kept checking out my bum every time I turned my back.

Ammo the Dachshund's First Baseball Game

I see you peekin!

Ammo the Dachshund's First Baseball Game

Of course the main reason I agreed to go to the ballpark….was to get a taste of a ballpark! Baseball hot dogs are the best after all!

Ammo the Dachshund's First Baseball Game

So after my very first Baseball Game I’ve decided that I’m officially a baseball fan. Although I did have to share my destain when I heard that dogs aren’t allowed in the ballpark all year round! Ammo the Dachshund

What the what!? How am I supposed to get my peanuts and cracker jacks?

Has your pup ever been to a baseball game?

World Cup

World Cup Soccer // Ammo the Dachshund // Team USA

Today marks the official start of the FIFA World Cup, and if you haven’t guessed already I’m a huge soccer (football to many of you) fan just like my dad.

World Cup Soccer // Ammo the Dachshund // Team USA

It’s also probably quite obvious that I’m rooting for team USA….after all I am an American.

World Cup Soccer // Ammo the Dachshund // Team USA

But you know, if they allowed dogs to tryout for the team I probably would be their star player right now (well and if they made soccer cleats in puppy sizes). Even better than Clint Dempsey!

World Cup Soccer // Ammo the Dachshund // Team USA

Not only would I look great in the USA uniform, but I’m also quite exceptional with the soccer ball.

Dribbling and passing, even goal scoring – I can do it all!

I’ve even mastered my GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAL yell! And after all, that’s the most important part when it comes to soccer!

So hopefully without my awesome soccer skills USA can still take home the World Cup title, although it would of been a heck of a lot easier with me on the team!

When Dogs Go Stand Up Paddleboarding

Stand Up Paddleboarding with your dog // Ammo the Dachshund

I’m no stranger to the lake, and one of my favorite warm-weather activities is to go Stand Up Paddleboarding (aka SUP) with my mom and dad. So over the weekend we hit up our favorite lake and boat rental – Marsh Creek Lake.

Stand Up Paddleboarding with your dog // Ammo the Dachshund

I enjoy the paddleboard more than any of the other rentals (kayak, motorized rowboat, sailboat) because the paddleboard puts me the closest to the water – and I do in fact enjoy swimming when the water is just the right temperature.

Stand Up Paddleboarding with your dog // Ammo the Dachshund

Most of the time I end up taking a dive into the water when mom and dad drift too far apart. I think I channel my inner herding dog (thanks to my pal Trooper) and I worry a bit when my “pack” gets too far apart. So I’ll dive into the water and swim to dad to make sure he’s still ok.

Stand Up Paddleboarding with your dog // Ammo the Dachshund

When we finally get further out on the lake it’s enjoyable just to lay around on the paddleboards and soak in the sun. After all summer is almost here – and I gotta work on my tan!

Stand Up Paddleboarding with your dog // Ammo the Dachshund

Stand Up Paddleboarding with your dog // Ammo the Dachshund

As much as attention as I tend to draw on the lake – you would think that it’s pretty rare to see dogs out on the water.

Stand Up Paddleboarding with your dog // Ammo the Dachshund

But in actuality I tend to see quite a few dogs when I head out, like this pup Kahula, who’s owner has an awesome go-pro setup on their board and posts amazing instagram photos of their paddleboarding adventures.

So if you’re looking for a fun summertime activity to enjoy with your dog I highly recommend paddleboarding. You can check with your local boat rental to see if they allow dogs on their rentals (as I’ve found most do) and even if the paddle board isn’t for you there are lots of other rentable water vessels! Just make sure your pup wear’s it’s life vest! Mine is from my friends at KurgoAmmo the Dachshund
