Every summer I enjoy hitting the lake, sometimes kayaking, most of the time Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP), and always practicing water safety by wearing a floatation device. While I’ve owned several life vests over the years, I’ve finally found one that fits me PERFECTLY, the Ruffwear K-9 Float Coat.
Being a Dachshund means that sometimes I have trouble finding harnesses, coats and even life vests that can accommodate my unique body type. Thankfully the Ruffwear Lifevest is adjustable in all the right places making it the best fitting one I’ve ever worn.
This floatation device has a sleek design making it slimmer fitting than any of the other vests I’ve tried, but don’t worry it’s still full of plenty of “float”!
This life jacket is not only a great design for Dachshunds, but it is also designed for dogs of all shapes and sizes. It even includes thoughtful details like a strong handle, optimally positioned to lift dogs out of the water, and reflective trim for enhanced visibility in or out of the water.
I enjoyed how the front of the vest was adjustable, but once set is easy to slip over your pup’s head, and the belly straps are also fully adjustable.
The design of this vest allowed me to have great free-flowing movement of my front legs, which is fantastic for swimming (and for all those occasions when you accidentally fall in!).
A fun little fact about me, while swimming might not be my #1 favorite thing to do, I do on occasion like to swim voluntarily, but I’ll only do so if I’m wearing a life jacket and the water is bath water warm!
I’m a big fan of the Ruffwear K-9 Float Coat, and I can’t recommend it enough for all those water loving dogs out there! It’s now my go-to summer accessory that I never leave home without.
You can fetch your own life jacket from Ruffwear for $79.95. (and incase you’re wondering, I wear a size XS and I’m 20lbs).
And now for the best part…

What a beautiful view
We have one that loves it and one that is afraid…
Whoo hoo! Ammo, you look pretty stylish in that life vest. Ruffwear really is the best.
Harper’s not a huge fan of swimming (although she’s a very efficient swimmer), but we kayak a lot and the added safety would be awesome to have!
He’s a bit unsure but we hope he’ll learn to love it!
My pup is mixed on swimming. She’ll jump in if I am in, but not otherwise. I took her SUP a few years back and she was very nervous and tried to make a jump for land when we finished and fell in. Luckily, I just grabbed her harness, but a life-vest would have been really handy!
My gus needs one!!
Daisy isn’t too sure of water in the bathtub or her little pool. I’ve never taken her to the lake because she doesn’t have a life jacket (even though we live on the lake). She needs this!!
Admiral likes the water, but only if we are in it with him! 😀
Lainey LOVES to swim — she is a daily swimmer and her sister Phoebe could care less. Lainey has loved water, baths, and swimming since she was a puppy. We just got an above ground pool and I’ve been searching for the best lifevest for her so I don’t have to worry! She could be asleep on the couch and we tell her to go swimming – she will run out to the back and jump in her kiddie pool.
He will wade but he’s not a big fan of swimming.
I think my Jet would love to swim if he’d give it more of a try! All he needs is a life vest to give him more confidence!
Ruthie is game for just about anything- she might like swimming a bit better with a vest
Ammo, I loved the video! You look like you were having a great time. You were truly the adventurer standing on the end of the board, leaning in, with your nose almost skimming the water.
Ammo, I do not think you are afraid of anything! I wish Sambo liked the water more. Maybe with a vest he would be braver.
My baby girl, JoJo (chocolate lab) LOVES the water.
oou! oou! pick me, Ammo, pick me! then mommy can take me swimming!
they love it
Logan and Diamond love the water and are always up for a swim.
My dog LOVES swimming. A little too much — it’s hard to get him out of the water!
Masuimi is, at 7, learning how to swim. At first we got her close to the water, then across a stream, and now she can paddle. She was terrified of water for a long time (and still kind of is) so a life vest is definitely on her wishlist.
hi i have 5 doxies and only 1 loves to swim the others hate water lol so i just take this one in the pool with me he starts to bark if he know i have the hose out or if his pool is being brought out
Super cute! I have a coonhound / greyhound mix that dabbles in water when she wants and a lab that loves it 🙂
Who else thinks this is cool
