When Barn Swallows Attack

Ammo the Dachshund on the Farm

This time of year I spend a lot of time hanging around the family farm. While mom does chores and rides ponies I hang out with my gal pals, Cricket and Spider.

Lately though our time together seems to get interrupted by the barn swallows that have made their home in the barn.

Swooping, diving, and yelling at us – those birds are relentless in making sure we know that our presence near their nests are unwelcome. Honestly, I can’t say I blame them – Spider, Cricket, and I are fierce hunters – and I may have inadvertently purposely helped Spider take down a few birds out of the air. In my defense, they do like to scream at us a lot!

I’ll be looking over my shoulder from now on when I’m on the farm. Does your dog like to chase birds too? Ammo the Dachshund

  1. My girls love to chase any sort of animal. They always want to chase the birds when we go to the park. One time at our old apartment, one pulled her leash out of my hand to go pin a robin to the ground. She then looked up at me like “hey look mom! what do I do with it now?”

Lately their obsession has been groundhogs. Our small yard has had a groundhog on 2 separate occasions and they went nuts both times.

  2. Pigeons, chipmunks and the occasional opossum are prey around here. It’s only half-hearted though. Only thing they are really interested in hunting is a piece of cheese.

  3. Of course. She also chases squirrels, rabbits, and the ground hogs. Our dachshund has actually gone into the ground hog den after the babies she heard crying. She brought me a dead baby rabbit that she “killed” once. Digs them out of the nest where they’re buried. Also the chipmunks. I don’t thinks she’s found the possum yet.

  4. My Habe loves to chase birds. He has a couple times snapped them out of the air. He aye them.Yuck! Do you eat them Ammo?

  5. We had tons of swallows that nested in our family cottage we had years ago. We just ended up having to deal with them (and wash the boat of bird poop every few hours 🙂 )
