Product Review: Outward Hound Life Vest for Dogs

You might remember that a couple of weeks ago mom purchased me a life vest from amazon just in time for my paddleboarding adventure.

Seeing as how some of my fans may be in the market for a life vest as well I thought I’d give you all a little rundown of how I’m liking it so far.

Product – Kyjen Outward Hound Life Jacket

Features:

  • Convenient top grab handle for easy resuce by hand or boat hook
  • Front float assists in keeping dog’s head above water

Pros:

  • Definitely helps keep me afloat much better
  • Handle makes it easy for mom or dad to rescue me out of the water
  • Front float helps keep my head above the water – which is a bonus because I hate getting water in my ears
  • It’s comfortable to wear
  • Bright color makes it easy to spot me floating in the water
  • Budget friendly price

Cons:

  • Sizes run smaller then the chart online – so a small is a bit too small for me and I probably should have ordered the medium. So when in doubt choose the next size up
  • Doesn’t have a d-ring attachment for a leash

Overall I’m very happy with my new vest, I definitely feel safer and enjoy swimming a lot more, I just wish I had gotten the medium so it fits me a little better.

You can fetch your own doggie life vest from amazon for about $20 Ammo the Dachshund

I was not paid or perked to write this review, product was fully purchased (thanks mom) – links do connect to my affiliate amazon shop.

  1. Hi Ammo!!

Mom & I went looking for life vests last weekend and we tried on the same Outward Hound that you have! Mom said she liked it because of all the extra buckles for safety, but it was a little tight across the chest/neck area. But when we tried the medium it was way too big, she was afraid I would slip out of it. How much do you weigh??

So we are going looking again this weekend, wish us luck!! 🙂

    • oooh have fun on your life vest shopping! I actually weight 17lbs. I’m much bigger than a mini dachshund but not quite as big as a standard.
Part of the reason I didn’t return my “sort of too small” life vest was because #1 I needed it that weekend and #2 I also thought getting a medium just might end up being way too big.
I just didn’t buckle my life vest as tightly as it should be – you can sort of see in the photos, but it still worked just as fine and the extra float in the front kept my head above water. Hope that helps! Good luck shopping!

  2. Thanks Ammo! We’ve been looking around for a good life vest – we have been leaning toward Outward Hound, and after your review are feeling like it’s the best fit! They also have them at Petsmart, which is where we’ll go to try them on. Keats is a mini with bizarre proportions and have trouble finding things that fit right, so we’ll see how that works out. Have a great weekend and stay cool!

  3. We were lucky to find Lucy’s life vest at the marina where we go boating so she could try it on. Her’s also has a sturdy handle, front float and a D-ring to attach her leash. Her’s was about $15. I’m so glad we bought it for her because she likes to stand on the very front of our boat. I won’t let her stand there unless we are going very slow. I love reading your blog about all your many adventures.

    • Even though mine doesn’t close super well in the front, it still stays on securely enough to keep me afloat – so for now it does the trick!

  4. I’m looking at getting one of these vests for my parents dachshund cross, her girth is 41cm and length 51cm she is also only 11months old. Would you suggest a small, as according to size chart that’s the size she should have but after your comment that size charting is smaller than stated thought id ask your opinion on what size you think would suit her best. unfortunately I don’t have any store that sell them nearby for me to take her to to try them on

    • The life vest was tight on me a bit – but it did fit once I adjusted the buckles to the near end. I would say probably still go with the small (or where she fits in measurement wise) because I hear the jump to a medium is a MUCH bigger life vest – although I only ever tried the small, so I can’t be entirely sure.
The benefit from ordering from amazon is that it’s really easy to return items, and if the size doesn’t fit just state the website sizing chart was wrong & you shouldn’t have to pay return shipping. Hope that helps!
