Birthday Week: DIY Dog Toys

One of the other fun gifts I got from my mom on my Birthday was some new dog toys! These dog toys are really special though, because my mom made them! Do you believe it? My dad didn’t even notice they weren’t store bought goodies.

Keep reading to find out how my mom made these super special toys just for me….thanks mom!

Old ball (a tennis ball* works great)
About 1/2 yard of Fabric
A piece of ribbon

DIY dog toys

1. Gather your supplies. Mom used an old squeaky ball from one of my toys and one of dad’s old stained polo shirts (he’s a messy eater just like me).

2. Cut your fabric into two strips – roughly 6″ x 14″ (you can adapt this to really any size you want)

3. Fold the fabric strips in half and wrap around your ball (placing the ball in the center of the folds). Tie your ribbon as tight as you can around the base of the ball after wrapping it several times around.

4. Cut the tail of your fabric into several 2″ wide strips, then using three strips at a time braid them into sections. Try to make your braids as tight as possible (it’s harder for little teeth to rip them apart then).

5. Using the excess fabric at the end of your braid tie several knots to keep the braids in place.

Yeah! Now you have a brand-new toy for your favorite furry friend!

Plastic Bottle
About a yard of fabric (we used an old tye-dyed bed sheet)

DIY dog toys

1. Select a plastic bottle to use as your new dog toy. Then cut three to four 1″ wide strips of fabric off one of the edges of your fabric. These will be used later as ties, a piece of ribbon would also work for this purpose.

2. Using your remaining fabric place the bottom of the bottle about 3″ from the edge and wind the fabric around the bottle. Wrap it up just like you would a hoagie in paper – tucking in the excess just before you reach the end of the fabric.

3. Using the 1″ wide strips of fabric you previously cut, tie them around the bottle tightly – using them to secure the fabric to the bottle. Make sure to tie one right after the bottle cap as well.

4. Cut the excess fabric near the cap of the bottle into 2″ wide strips. Then using three strips at a time, braid each section and finish off by knotting them.

These are awesome dog toys! Creative, easy to make and very fun to play with. I’m going to make that ball octopus-like toy, both me and my dog will love playing with it 🙂 I find most dog toys that sell in stores are overexpensive, often low quality and kind of boring. The homemade ones are a lot more fun and cost you nothing 🙂

    Love your Mama’s toy ideas:)

  3. tracey08-22-13

Very good idea. I usually use a mens sport sock & the tennis ball. Put the ball inside the sock & ite a knot in the open end.- Instant toy.

Great toy ideas! Going to make the ball toy for my wirehaired dachshund, Bramble, for Christmas using his old Kong Wubba which he has ripped to shreds. Exactly what I was looking for and won’t cost a cent. My kids can help, which will be a fun project for us.
    Ammo is super cute! Thanks!

  5. Jada07-13-14

The second one is the best toy ever! Now that my dog has gotten used to it he won’t put it down. It’s great for tug of war and just to distract him from trying to bite the bed sheets. Thank you for sharing how to make this!

I’m stuck making the water bottle toy! I don’t understand what you’re meant to do with the bottle cap end!! Please help as I’d love to make this for my dog!

    • Ammo02-04-16

Basically the bottom of the bottle gets wrapped up like a burrito, then using little strips of fabric you cut as ties you tie them around the bottle to keep the fabric from falling off. Tie one at the bottle cap end (like you would put a hair tie around your hair) and then just braid the excess fabric hanging down. The pictures in this post should help you out.

“Wrap it up just like you would a hoagie in paper” This was a *perfect* instruction! I was a little confused and this made it crystal clear! 🙂

  13. Natasha07-11-16

I had two big lovable dogs, yellow lab, and an American Bull. I made two of the water ball toys and they were destroyed within minutes LOL. I spent a lot of money on toys and bones, it’s not a waste because they use it but they tear them apart within minutes. I wish I could find something that was more sturdy. But thank you for this idea save me a few dollars today 🙂

I want to know if there is toys for German Shepherds, who loves to chew. I’ve been looking online for toys for them, but they are overpriced, which I don’t want. However, I just saw your homemade ones, which looks like it will last for a long time. Although I have one problem, I’m not sure if the shirt will rip or the t-shirt rope will break.

If you have a really strong chewer you will probably need a safer toy than something handmade. I suggest you check out the toys on as they have a section for strong chewers. You can even use code AMMO for an extra surprise at checkout!
