Ponies, Kittens and Groundhog Holes

I spend a lot of my time on the family farm, and as I roam freely over the 20 acres I can always find plenty to do. I thought it would be a blast to share some of the fun stuff that I do on the farm with everyone, so I made my mom spend a day following me around.

On this particular morning I visited with my pony friends Minnow & Blitz for a short while. They made funny faces at me while I sniffed around for buried treasure in the tall grass. So far my efforts have yet to produce any riches or gold, but I won’t give up.

Then I spent a good deal of time lounging around with my kitty pals, Spider and Cricket.

Spider and Cricket are usually quite content to spend their entire days sunning.

Well, in Spider’s case, also wrestling bits of hay.

Me on the other hand, I get a little bored of sunning and lounging all day. So that’s why I struck up a game of Hide and Seek with Cricket, and ultimately found this awesome stick to play with.

And just when I was starting to think that I didn’t have anything else to show my mom (and my blog friends) about what everyday life is like for me on the farm…..

….I remembered the holy grail of adventures, the thing that I covet the most, and don’t normally share with anyone…

…for security purposes I can’t show you EXACTLY how I got there….

…but regardless, WELCOME TO MY HOLE! My groundhog hole to be exact, and if I’m divulging all my secrets, then you must know that there isn’t just one hole on the farm, but ten to be exact, well eleven if you count the one across the culdesac in the neighbor’s yard.

I know where all my little furry friends live, and I monitor their where-a-bouts on a day-to-day basis. It’s a tough job, but I just know one of these days my groundhog friends will invite me in for tea.

So, there you have it, a typical day on the farm for me. What about you? Where is your holy grail of adventures? Any of my Dachshund friends out there monitor groundhog holes too?

  1. Oh you lucky little doxie you! To have some many fun groundhogs holes to call your own. My doxies are not so lucky to have their own holes, but they do love to dig and make cool places to hide. Like under blankets and couch cushions and such…
    🙂

    • Digging is the best isn’t it? Blankets and couches are great substitutes….atleast then you don’t have to have “bathtime”.

  2. Ammo,
Indy, the doxie on our farm, loves the ground hog holes also, but our mom fills them in with rocks, screenings and stuff….boring. It is most fun when the humans catch a ground hog in the cage and Shadow and Indy run around it barking! I think Indy would like to come play with you and explore your ground hog holes.

    • How unlucky for Indy! My mom used to fill mine in too, but it just made me obsess even more about them – not to mention then I started searching for more holes much further from the barn than my mom liked.
And it sounds like Indy needs to come to Earth Dog Competition! They actually LET you go down tunnels and follow the scent of rats….and if you do it really fast you win a prize!
P.S. Please do come play with me, I can always use more doxie friends!

  3. Oh Amo, it warms my heart to see you so joyful and free to play and roam. You are such a lucky doggie!

  4. Moved to Virginia a year ago from long island with my mini dachshund. Oh yeah…my wife too. Today the dog followed a groundhog into its hole. After removing brush about 3 feet high I found a 300 pound rock with the hole at the edge. I moved the rock and heard the dog barking about 6 feet from the edge of the hole. This was her first tunneling experience. 15 minutes later i see a tail backing out of the hole. I grabbed it and pulled her out. Groundhog hair in her mouth and all. Phew!

    • My mom knows that scene all too well. I’ve been in fights with groundhogs and pulled out of many many holes on the farm. And yes it gives my mom a heart attack every time! What can I say, I love a good groundhog chase!
